usb dvd drive and LXDE netbook - vlc doesn't identify?

If I try to play a DVD with my external dvd drive (Samsung) connected to my netbook, neither VLC nor Gnome Mplayer co-operate. Parole does, though it has no deinterlacing feature so that's not too good. I'm thinking maybe VLC for example is trying to read a normal internal DVD drive's address when t...

Make a CD from a pendrive Linux?

I've 'mislaid' my Linux Mint .iso files, don't have the facilities to download again yet, and would like to redo my pendrive Mint. Can its contents be made back into the .iso? There is one file on there that seems roughly .iso size, filesystem.squashfs, so I'm thinking it could be possible? (Basical...

Alternatives to Network Manager/Wicd? (LXDE-friendly)

I'm using Mint 11 LXDE (not LMDE) on a netbook. For odd-sounding reasons I'll skip here related to the dreaded internet addiction, I'd like to replace Network Manager with something else ideally that can do wireless and ethernet but not Mobile Broadband. I tried Wicd for the first time in a while to...

Re: How to turn on Desktop effects in LXDE

Xcompmgr is pretty good though, I prefer it to the distractions of Compiz. With this line added to /etc/xdg/lxsession/Mint-LXDE/autostart the LXDE desktop is brought to life and doesn't seem any longer like a compromise.

@xcompmgr -CcfF -I-.15 -O-.03 -D1 -t-1 -l-1 -r3 -o.32

Re: Mint 12 - how verbose/no splash boot?

I've just tried this and it seems fine. Just removing quiet splash and leaving the quotes and then doing sudo update-grub in the terminal and rebooting. It's not quite the full Debian 6 display of gibberish that I like, as it is slightly intermittent with some black screen still, but it will do. It ...

Re: disable touchpad tapping?

As it's commonly searched I'll add that on my current third or fourth return to LXDE I've solved this. I couldn't get a script to work as described in the last person's post but it isn't necessary. The line synclient MaxTapTime=0 goes in /etc/xdg/lxsession/Mint-LXDE/autostart and without the @ sign ...

Re: How do we make desktop icons keep still between reboots?

Sorry, I was talking impatient nonsense...

Great - if you right-click on the icon the option is right there to make the positioning stick.

How to make desktop icons keep still btwn reboots? [Solved]

I've returned to LXDE several times after losing patience, which later so far with the exception of being unable to turn touchpad tapping off on my particular netbook has turned out to be more my fault than anything. The thing that's bugging me now is that desktop icons seem to not want to stay wher...

Mint - can't see installer pages on netbook

I think I remember a way round this being possible but I don't remember what it is. When I was trying to put Mint 12 on a netbook yesterday I could go no further than the screen for choosing an i.d. picture, as 'Continue' is off the screen edge, though there is no similar problem with Ubuntu 11.10. ...

Mint 12 - how verbose/no splash boot?

With previous versions of Mint I'd put a hash in one line of /etc/default/grub to get a verbose boot but this doesn't seem to do anything now. I like to see something happening at boot and it seems for a while an animated logo has been absent - a black screen has too often for many of us suggested p...

Firefox - tabs closing prompt won't go away

If closing Firefox with multiple tabs open there is a warning prompt which does not fail to appear on later use when closing multiple tabs even if the correct box is ticked or the correct option is chosen in Preferences or the correct parameter is changed in about:config. Someone else here marked a ...

Re: Ubuntu 11.10 and the Gnome Keyring - spirals into madnes

I'm noticing that, even after a few months' Updates, the Gnome Keyring requests for passwords occur with Chrome/Chromium but not Firefox, if there's some clue in there.

Re: Am I way off?

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try when I get home. I think I will download Mint 9 again too in case, out of curiosity about whether things will work differently. Otherwise it will be time for a Launchpad bug report, whether or not its hopeful or appropriate.

Thanks for your contributions.

Re: Am I way off?

I'd liked to have added a 'Solved' here but though it seems the job's nearly done, what happens on my laptop is as with your previous script. With the 01ifupdown file altered as suggested the wireless itself disconnects as soon as it connects, and then it reconnects again in a loop of this process. ...

Re: Am I way off?

This is looking great, but the file is different in Mint 12 enough that I'm unsure. Where would it go in this? I think it looks like we're done then, that'll be amazing. Thanks for getting back to me and if you're able to help with this hopefully last step. #!/bin/sh -e # Script to dispatch NetworkM...

Some Gnome 3 tweaks

Though I'm not about to start creating themes in great detail there were a couple of things I had to change to stop Gnome 3 from irritating me, just small but perverse aesthetic errors of the Gnome team. The attached folder contains what I've done, and you can hopefully see in the picture at http://...

ripping mp3 at 320k - which software and settings?

Just returned to Mint (12) after six more itchy weeks in Windows 7 Land and want to stick for the time being what I used while 'there', 320k mp3 files when ripping my CDs. I used Sound Juicer before to make ogg files but it seems like that's only giving me variable bit rate mp3 files at under 200k. ...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Alpha 1 Screenshot Tour

I briefly ran 11.10 from a stick on my new 11.6 inch machine and it looks a lot better that way, in proportion finally, with the fonts not childish-looking and the garish Launcher looking somehow not so garish. Overall though unless they spring some humble and wise last minute changes in April I'll ...

Re: .ogg and Windows stubbornness

How strange, I'd never heard of AIMP2, and I have used WinAmp - had to abandon it because their dated-looking logo icon makes me feel nauseous. But yes, I can't use Foobar anymore because it keeps dropping milliseconds of music a couple of times per song, which when you've got a new laptop is quite ...

.ogg and Windows stubbornness

Having gotten more wrapped up in Linux than I could afford, sidelining the writing of a novel among other things, a realistic and once central project for me, I am for between eighteen months and three years back using Windows on both my computers. In spirit, after three years of it, I'm very much a...
