Re: Backlight script - should this have worked?

Thanks. acpi wasn't installed but things aren't solved yet. It looks like I don't need to understand cut, though I do now from the explanation given, but if I type acpi -a into a terminal it gives either on-line or off-line, with nothing needing to be cut. So shouldn't the following work? It isn't w...

Backlight script - should this have worked?

I have this in, for the time being, my home folder, with the chmod +x applied. I sewed it together from an amount of reading and things remembered from attempts to script a couple of years ago. If I'm honest it started to drive me mad then, so that I'm unlikely to learn this in competent depth for a...

Lenovo X61S and Cinnamon (Intel GM965)

I installed Mint 17.3 64 bit Cinnamon version on my Lenovo X61S, a Thinkpad. It has an Intel GM965 graphics chip. I've tried this same install with my ATI-based desktop pc with no glitches, but I'm getting some odd sights with the Thinkpad, which seem to only show with Cinnamon - I'm currently using...

What governs tearing in video files/ DVD?

I have been back with Windows 7 for quite some time, after zipping between Windows and Linux since 2008, and having a brief balk at Windows 10, but think that Gnome 3 is starting to shape up, and am once again hardening to MS's business practice and aesthetics. I've been meddling with some distros -...

Re: Quality DVD ripping or mkv conversion?

Thanks, that's great, plenty to chew on and yes I hadn't known of the Linux MakeMKV, which I'm now about set up. It does sound like I'd be happier to invest some time learning the not so straightforward programs to get good quality though there is the temptation to blow credit card money on a big ha...

Quality DVD ripping or mkv conversion?

I'm needing to raise some money soon and am thinking of selling my DVDs, but then would want to preserve the tiny portion of them that I'd watch again. I've found one decent Windows program that makes a faithful 6gb-ish file from a DVD but when I briefly was downloading films I'd seen pretty strong ...

Re: Fluxbox and autostarted programs

Thanks. I had another attempt and things seem okay now. I may have missed the '&' from after the program name, if that would cause Fluxbox to not start.

Fluxbox and autostarted programs [Solved]

Hello. I've installed Mint 17.2 on an old laptop, initially Xfce, but I've added Fluxbox. I want Fluxbox to start with the file manager open and a battery monitor facility or possibly the file manager, a terminal and the battery monitor. Which file do I use in my situation (of Xfce and its default d...

Re: Is it possible to install older VLC versions?

Yes I noticed you were using quite a modest machine, very responsible of you... I may hang onto this pc a little while longer and look out for a cheap eBay graphics card as there seems room. Unless I'm mistaken this has Intel graphics which don't seem to involve the shenanigans that ATI and nVidia c...

Re: Is it possible to install older VLC versions?

Somehow a post I'd thought I sent before phd21's vanished. For some reason I said Dell but it's a HP, specs below. I'm thinking that the video chip is possibly just too old. I'm fairly sure I tried Debian 7 with LXDE with not much more luck. I'm considering putting Xfce on top of the Ubuntu minimal ...

Is it possible to install older VLC versions?

I'm setting an older Dell p.c. up to give to a friend. It copes with latest distros fine with most things but struggles with video files and DVD. It fared better with Mint 9 during a test, and better still with XP running VLC 1.1.9. Is there some rigid reason I couldn't have a very recent Mint with ...

Re: Has get_iplayer died again?

Thanks. I've added the ppa for get-iplayer***, having only just rustily remembered that ppa's exist, and all is now well with version 2.94.

***For anyone who needs to know:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jon-hedgerows/get-iplayer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install get-iplayer

Has get_iplayer died again? [Solved]

I've got Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64 bit on my Thinkpad x61s, all updated. It seems the genius get_iplayer program is once again in trouble. Or has anyone here found otherwise? I've tried several shows but the program cannot fetch them, whether this is the BBC fighting it or a side effect of the iPlayer f...

Realtek wireless is weaker than Windows?

I'm using a Realtek wireless dongle with lsmod tells me is using the module r8188eu. Linux Mint 17.2 64 bit Cinnamon, although this issue existed with 17.1 Mate and Cinnamon editions. The wireless signal is considerably weaker than when using Windows 7 or 8.1. Can nothing be done about this? Should ...

Re: Microsoft keyboard with touchpad

Having typed this into the terminal it transpires not to be a Synaptics device: synclient MaxTapTime=0.

Any further ideas are welcome, thanks.

Microsoft keyboard with touchpad

This is all working fine, except I would like to be able to alter tapping - to switch it off like most of us would a Synaptics touchpad on a laptop,or at least shut off it's other functions as it will often, as far as I'm concerned, mis-trigger. It's a bit sensitive. Can this be done? I see no facil...

Re: What's this Firefox address bar glitch?

Your suggestion worked, without other side effects, so that'll more than do for me. Thanks! So I gather it is video chip-related? I'd tried a couple of different themes a little while back without improvement.

What's this Firefox address bar glitch? [Solved]

The address bar highlights the same colour as the text, the grey and black streaks you see. I'm not sure I've seen this before and wondered if it was a graphics chip-related thing, or this old single core cpu - VLC plays some videos with a black square or two superimposed sometimes. The machine, an ...

Re: Mate/ Mint-X - a couple of hopefully nice edits

scr.jpg A change along those lines seems to have worked fairly well. The start of that #Shadows section in the gtkrc file now runs in my edited theme: # Shadows image { function = SHADOW_GAP file = "images/other/null.png" border = {4, 4, 4, 4} stretch = TRUE } image { function = SHADOW shadow = IN ...

I'm using Mate but maybe you've at least given me a clue there, I'll have a prod around.
