Re: Mate/ Mint-X - a couple of hopefully nice edits

Thanks and I'm glad you don't seem offended! I hadn't done any theme fiddling for a long time as I was put off when gtk3 came in - I can't really be bothered to learn it. It had been a bit of a fetish for a long time though and once I'd returned to Mate the itch was too great. I would like to know h...

Mate/ Mint-X - a couple of hopefully nice edits

Screenshot-1.png Attached is an edit of the Mint-X theme which I think improves the look of the Mate Panel, and in ways which I think Mint-X's author had been aiming for judging by some unused files in its folder. I've removed the Window List button handles, and also the Gnome Main Menu arrow if yo...

How do I exclude Mint Menu from 'Place Windows' (Compiz)

The standard Mint Menu is dumped half an inch further up the screen if I have Place Windows activated in Compiz, but randomly, not every time. I'm sure there was some way of excluding some types of window/applet from being affected by Compiz settings but it's been years since I felt familiar with Co...

Re: [Solved] 17.1 Rebecca - small but nonetheless annoying i

Wouldn't it be dconf-editor that you need, by installing dconf-tools, rather than gconf-editor? I'm fairly sure this is where the setting is, if you decide not to stick with Emerald.

Is this normal?

Having cured my distro-hopping and Windows-Linux seesawing by having one on the laptop, one on the pc, I've settled with 64 bit Mint 17 Cinnamon edition. It's 17.1 that I've installed, with all the updates, and though it's mostly fine it seems a bit glitchy still so I'd like to know if it's just my ...

Re: XBMC and automount other drives?

Beautiful, that worked out fine, drive automounting perfectly in Mate and XBMC.

Thanks.

(I will add here in case someone else uses this info that I had to redo the video and music sources in XBMC as the old file path was then incorrect, but this only needs doing once.)

XBMC and automount other drives? [Solved]

One pc I have I intend to use mostly as a media center. It has Mint 17 Mate edition 64 bits on it but I've set it to boot to XBMC. My music and films are on a second drive which is not being mounted. I wondered if, when booting to XBMC, the Mate processes are bypassed to any extent. I know this othe...

foolproof method of wiping/formatting pendrive?

There are about eight 'memory sticks'/ 'pendrives'/ 'usb keys' in my home and I am having a lot of trouble using them. Sometimes i'll use DD to make a live usb but then find I cannot erase and sometimes not even access the drive later. Or the program named 'Disks' in the Mint menus refuses to format...

Minimising data useage in Firefox?

I use the imageblock add-on with Firefox and have flash blocked also. This is to make my Vodafone mobile broadband data last longer.*** I don't download any files or watch video. I wondered if there's anything else I can do to Firefox or Mint to make my data allowance last longer still. I have used ...

Inspecting Kubuntu 14.04 - 3 minor issues

One of my computers has had Kubuntu 14.04 64 bit on it for a few days. It seems fairly well-behaved but I wonder if the developer(s) who make Mint KDE use this forum. I have firstly a sort of academic interest in why Mint as opposed to Kubuntu puts the expected shadows on Libreoffice's menus - I use...

Re: Firefox multiple tabs glitch [Solved]

I can't believe I'm still having to do this myself manually a year later with later installs... In the address bar of Firefox enter: about:config Accept the warning and proceed. Find the following settings and make sure those are set all to false (else double-click them to change to false): - browse...

Re: like 'shred' but for folders?

Beautiful, thanks - I'd been thinking it was strange that shred couldn't do folders so it's great that it can. Over the years I've got used to manually deleting the hidden files in the home folder for various reasons - is Bleachbit doing more than that in an automated way or is it jut automating wha...

like 'shred' but for folders? [Solved]

I'm intending to pass on a computer to a relative soon and as it's set up very well I'd rather just delete my stuff securely and pass it on like that. I've used shred in the terminal for single files but is there an equivalent for folders (with different file suffixes in its contents otherwise shred...

Re: Firefox theme and KDE

It should be working, I have firefox 26. The add-on gets regularly updated too. Did you get the prompt to re-start? It's a classier look, subtle though the change is! I've sometimes kept the actual file to use on another computer without installing from the site. If it's okay the file is attached he...

Re: Firefox theme and KDE

Hopefully they might include that add-on's theme as standard with Mint 17 KDE. Thanks for your reply in my other thread too. (I might try 32 bit to see if it's better behaved.)

Lenovo X200 sound randomly disappears

In Alsamixer my sound chip is listed "Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa)" I don't think there is any physical fault as it seems some random settings prodding eventually gets sound back. I'm using KDE, 64 bit Mint 16. Sometimes I'll start up Amarok or audacity or VLC and there is no sound. One time I know I ...

Firefox theme and KDE

I do think this seemingly obscure add-on greatly improves the sketchy appearance of Firefox in KDE (though designed for broader use):

Are these Mint, KDE or kernel issues?

I think KDE is really coming on well now. Realistically surely it's the main hope for Linux desktop-wise - very well-designed, modern and efficient in its behaviours, and Mint's use of it is the most polished I think. There seem to be some little bugs and regressions depending on what computer I try...

Can I properly install Celtx in KDE? [Solved]

There is this program like Final Draft, screenplay software, which is downloaded as a tar.gz from the Celtx site. Once unpacked the program is ready to go with no compiling - you start it with an executable shell script file in its folder. I can create a kind of template Celtx file that will open th...
