strait forward http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/ should work the same in natty and mint 11. Point is to get the modeset added to the end of the grub menu only had to do this to 2 systems my self. As I recall it can be done via recovery mode...

That said, create a new admin user and remove the old would be my best advice.

DO NOT install grub2

I said ------ in this order
grub-common

grub-pc --------------------- (that is grub 2 lol )

grub-mint-theme

startup manager
ONLY

get grub fully working then let me know.

update issue is also an easy fix.

If all is sorted out, ya might want to reinstall startup manager as well

if it gives ya any cra* reinstalling grub-common after removing all grub packages.

just close synaptic and re-open it.

Great you got in. Fix from there is actually quite easy. load up with super grub disk. go to synaptic package manager remove all mentions of grub / grub 2 . Be sure to use completely remove option. Now install grub-common then grub-pc then grub-mint-theme enter terminal sudo update-grub2 if anything...

Sorry bro, allow me to first educate you WHY. Some time back GPU drivers started getting ported to the kernel to allow for better live support. What your seeing is a none supported GPU with the kernel being used. Most likely due to age. options now 1. older distro, there are some winners. One winner...

we each have our ways, that are power users.

What I do is 2 GB swap

the rest to root / . ext4

keep it simple

Then I make a full backup often of all my home data.

Old school rules here, but all on your PC personal data should be on a backup at all times.

All good, I know by law the manufacture still has to offer SOME means of recovery. 9 times out of 10 it is a disk sent to you of a recovery already made. That said, Laptop with Linux used sales for the same price as one with windows. For one main reason, the software included matters not. Sale price...
