[SOLVED] Help. Mint does not login - initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

When booting up Mint I have this error: Your session only lasted 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix the problem. x View details...

Re: Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Sorry ajgreeny I marked this solved prematurely. As you still have the problem I have re-opened it. Hopefully others will join the conversation. My problem has cleared up but I don't know why. I use Adblock Plus and it may have been caused by a filter which has subsequently been updated. Are you usi...

Re: Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

ajgreeny,
Thanks for testing. Now this is weird. I just tested and there is now no problem with memory usage or
CPU usage. I even replicated the actions you described. Maybe something has changed on the site.
Further testing required.

Re: Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Pjotr,
Thank you for testing and confirming my experience. I still can't understand why Chromium can cope with it but Firefox can't. I have also tested Firefox 58.0.2 on Windows 7 and there is no noticeable problem.

[Solved] Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Since upgrade to Firefox 58.0.1 (unless it is a coincidence) the Daily Telegraph site http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ uses rapidly increasing memory until it freezes the browser. This problem exists with Firefox (and Palemoon and Basilisk) but not Chromium which suggests it is a Mozilla issue. Can you p...

Re: Brightness keeps changing when switching between battery and AC

l. To save this setting press Fn+F5. That turns on/off Wifi for me. :-) Ah, different laptop! Anyway, on further testing it does not save between sessions. It seems that most( if not all) Linux operating systems default to 50% of AC brightness when switching from AC to battery power. Whilst this sa...

Re: Brightness keeps changing when switching between battery and AC

orschiro, Here is a solution that works for my Acer laptop. See if it works for you. The brightness setting for battery power needs to be set separately from the AC setting. Boot using AC power. When OS is fully running unplug the AC lead. The screen will dim and you can set the brightness to the de...

I see the same behaviour with Mate version of LM 18.3. As far as I can remember this also occurred with previous versions.

Re: necessary to revert microcode if no issues with 3.20180108?

I installed the latest update before I read this post. The revised version still passes the Meltdown test using:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep isolation

Re: TimShift and external drives

The developer of Timeshift gave me this clarification about how to boot the Live CD/USB in UEFI mode if required : "You have to go into the UEFI boot menu when your PC starts by pressing F12 or Delete key. Under the boot devices menu, it will have options for booting in both BIOS and UEFI mode....

Re: TimShift and external drives

Try this; ... 1. On initial setup of Timeshift, plug in the external hard-drive, set Timeshift to store snapshots on the external hard-drive, to non-schedule and manually create your 1st snapshot on the external hard-drive. 2. Reset Timeshift to store snapshots on the internal hard-drive and unplug...

Just do manual backups not scheduled ones. Then you can do them at a time and frequency that suits you.

Re: TimShift and external drives

2. My intent is to connect an external drive from time to time for backups and TimeShift. So it will not be connected all the time. Can this be done as I would not set up a schedule or would this cause TimeShift to create full backups everytime? No, Timeshift will not create a full backup every tim...
