I followed the old Unix rule of 2x RAM (I've got 4gig, so I went with 8gig). Unfortunately, swap & hibernate doesn't seem to work on my machine but with a 250meg HD, I can spare the space.

[SOLVED] Strange Gnome Terminal Behavior
I don't know where to put this, so I figured I'd post it here, since I'm running Mint XFCE 201104. All of a sudden, whenever I open a terminal, it shrinks down to be approximately 29 columns wide down from the standard 80. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is rather annoying to have to manually...

Re: Just installed XFCE Debian: Massive update?
How can I "reboot" the update manager so it reflects currently installed programs? After, you change the sources.list from 'testing' to 'squeeze' . . . a simple (in the terminal) sudo apt-get update should do it. You can also tell the Update manager to ignore discrete packages by name (I ...

Re: LM XFCE (surprised by the speed)
There is another advantage apart from the speed and relative liteness of Mint XFCE: they have already made sure that the various codecs, Flash players and Javascript engines are configured and working. I've got it running on an old Dell GX260 as well as a more up to date HP HDX 16 laptop, and I will...

Re: Updating firefox
For people on Mint XFCE, I went to a command prompt and ran:
sudo /opt/firefox/firefox
And then went through to Help >About Firefox and let it do its thing.
I figured it was better than doing alt-F2, since the open terminal window reminded me that I wasn't running FF as my normal login.

Re: No audio Mint 9
Try adding the following line to your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 I had a Compaq CQ60 until recently that ran sound out of the box, but it is possible you have the same audio chipset as my newer HP Pavilion HDX16, which wouldn't work until I did this (thoug...

Re: Xfce Nvidia drivers
My new laptop also has an Nvidia card (GeForce 9600M GT in an HP HDX16), and I was able to follow the instructions off the Nvidia download page verbatim: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-275.09.07-driver.html Since xfce used the nouveau driver by default I had to follow the instructio...

Re: HP Pavillion HDX16 keyboard shortcuts, susp/res & reboot
Update #2: I upgraded the BIOS to the most recent (F.32), and suspend/resume now works. Hibernate gives an error that looks to be related to not being able to shut off the ethernet NIC, but this is definite improvement. Really liking tinkering with the machine, and Mint XFCE. More as I find it. MikeC

[SOLVED] Microphones on an HP HDX 16
I am slowly fixing all the glitches of Mint XFCE 201104 on my HP Pavilion HDX 16, and this is one that I think is due to my own unfamiliarity with audio setups under Linux. The sound card works great (I had to add a line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf: options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4) for playb...

[SOLVED] Re: xscreensaver not seeing new screensavers
Ok. xscreemsaver-data adds: fiberlamp and fuzzyflakes. I'm sorry if this is obvious to you but are you sure you're not looking for one of the other add-ons? xscreensaver-data-extra, which adds a lot more? sudo apt-get install xscreensaver-data-extra Huh. That was the package I thought I had added, ...

That was the one, and thanks for the pointers.
But it still doesn't explain why I'm not seeing the screensavers from the package I installed.

[SOLVED] xscreensaver not seeing new screensavers
This is on the lastest Mint xfce (201104). I installed the xscreensaver-data package but none of the ones in the package come up as installed on the xscreensaver control panel. I also had problems manually adding the Linux Mint screensaver from linuxmintart.org (though that could have been my fault)...

Re: HP Pavillion HDX16 keyboard shortcuts, susp/res & reboot
Update: I installed the NVidia drivers for my card (Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT), since some of what I've found online suggested that would fix the suspend & hibernate. It didn't, but at least now I can do a restart/init 6 without it hanging (though oddly, the screen doesn't blank out at the end of ...

Re: Xfce on CD
Get yourself a 2gig USB stick and use Unetbootin to load it (if the machine in question will boot from USB, of course). I had a machine with just a CD-ROM, and I got a bit fancy with using the Partition Magic distro to make a small partition to hold the ISO, then loaded Ubuntu 10.10 (it was the only...

[SOLVED] HP Pavillion HDX16 keyboard shortcuts, susp/res
I got a an HP Pavillion HDX16-1025nr at a flea market for a decent price, and though Mint xfce ran almost totally from the get-go (it was quite gratifying to wipe out the previous OS, MS Vista), I have 3 very minor issues that I need a little consultation with. (If this isn't the right board, I apol...
