Re: First Time Install - Possible Major Graphics Problem?

From the thread at Ubuntu forums it is suggested to use a kernel parameter as workaround. You can either add i810.modeset=0 or i915.modeset=0 (try both I think) to the boot parameters in GRUB. Press and hold shift during boot to get to the GRUB menu if it isn't shown by default. Edit the boot parame...

Re: grub brakes after every upgrade

Hi, is the full error you are getting "symbol not found: grub_divmod64_full"? And do you perhaps dual-boot with Windows? Depending on that, the http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1735231 thread has some possible solutions. There it is suggested a software update for grub-pc package might not h...

Re: First Time Install - Possible Major Graphics Problem?

The Ubuntu 11.04 version (Linux Mint 11 is based on that) has known issues with the 82865G chip in combination with Compiz. You should run "Gnome (no effects)" default as workaround. You can get some more info here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1746497 . You could also try downgrading Com...

Re: Battery (Laptop)

Try adding the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor to the panel (right-click on empty spot, choose "Add to panel...") and see if you can switch it there to lower frequency or other behavior. Perhaps running without Compiz (the graphical window effects) will save energy also (on the login screen, at the bo...

Re: Two HDD

Yes you can. There are various approaches to make this work. One approach is: 1. Only connect the harddisk you want to install Windows on 2. Install Windows 3. Now also connect the harddisk you want Linux Mint installed on, and make sure it is the first harddisk 4. Install Linux Mint Now to be able ...

Re: What partition do I install to?

Wait, so can I just select the partition with /home and leave the other /root partitions alone? Uh, yes you can. But the Xubuntu installed on another / root partition won't have a /home partition then. Why would you want this? Install Linux Mint over the / partition of Xubuntu, and instruct it also...

Re: Force to login during boot in Terminal (kernel upgrade?)

The less memory may be due to a integrated graphics chip (those take some part of main memory, which the OS then can't use for general tasks and so it is not reported), or do you have a discrete graphics card? As for not booting, I'm assuming GRUB does load? (Press and hold shift during boot to get ...

Re: Can malware from Wine affect the Linux side?

Short answer is yes at least for malware, though in a limited way. Wine is malware-compatible, according to the people from Wine themselves: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-3cb8f054b33a63be30f98a1b6225d74e305a0459 (The link also shares some tips on increasing security while running Wine.) Re: What partition do I install to?

Hi, easiest to boot into Xubuntu and see where the partitions are currently mounted. Open terminal, and run the following command: grep ^/dev/[hs]d /etc/mtab | cut -d' ' -f1,2 On my system I have /dev/sda1 mounted as / (root) and /dev/sdb1 mounted as /home. If I were to install another Linux distro ...

Re: mintMenu is hanging regularly

Don't get dramatic about it :D This is caused by the Mint menu search also looking with what you type for packages to install. It is a known issue on all but really fast computers, there are 2 possible solutions (if the first doesn't work, try the second). Both disable the Mint menu to search for pa...

Re: Zeitgeist - logging everything you do in Mint11

I've just checked: disabling Zeitgeist Datahub in Startup Applications ends all zeitgeist daemons from running. You can remove all zeitgeist packages with following. This will remove all 5 zeitgeist packages, and nothing else in Linux Mint 11. Apparently no other applications are using zeitgeist? su...

Re: Zeitgeist - logging everything you do in Mint11

I've disabled Zeitgeist in the Startup Applications (I did this directly after installation), and have not seen anything that didn't work as a consequence. Perhaps more is needed to kill it, I'll have a look with the link you shared later. I think it is only useful for Unity and especially GNOME She...

Re: Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste

Hi, this holds true only for the Terminal. You can easily change this in the keyboard shortcuts preferences in the menu of the Terminal. I always change it to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. Just remember if you want to interrupt an operation in the Terminal, to use Ctrl+Shift+C to cancel :D

Re: Newbie Linux user, I have some questions about Office pr

Is open office any better? I assume not, most development effort is going into LibreOffice these days. OpenOffice is a relic. Is there any way to run excel stably in Mint? You can use Wine to run Excel. But versions newer than 2003 are not well supported: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?s...
