Re: Trying to install LMDE, run into a "hang".

If you just want to install LMDE, just burn the DVD image to a DVD, or use UNetbootin (runs on Windows or OS X also) to put it on a USB drive. If you don't know what a kernel is, I have not a clue how you got to use a multiboot USB drive. Why so complicated?

Re: Have Dell Inspiron 530 want to upgrade graphics card Hel

Well, for an objective view: 1. The GeForce 8400 GS chip has a performance score of 160 at the mid-range cards list at http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/mid_range_gpus.html . 2. The Intel GMA 3150 Express, which is near half as slow as your Intel GMA 3100, has a score of 69 at the low-end cards list...

Re: Wolfram Alpha CDF Plugin, Installing.

You might try launching it directly. Either:

Code: Select all

/opt/cdf/Executables/wolframcdfplayer
Or:

Code: Select all

/opt/cdf/SystemFiles/FrontEnd/Binaries/Linux/WolframCDFPlayer

Re: How do I dual boot XP when Mint is installed first?

Windows XP will erase your entire harddisk, unless you make a new NTFS partition upfront. To be able to do that, you can not be logged in to your system. So, boot from your Linux Mint Live CD/DVD/USB stick. Then run GParted, click which partition you want to make smaller, right-click on it and make ...

Re: Backup of system?

Hi, for any question like "I used to have this program on ..." and for alternatives on Linux, you can use alternativeto.net. So, for time machine: http://alternativeto.net/software/time-machine/?profile=linux&platform=linux Back In Time is what you want if you liked Time Machine. There are lots of s...

Re: Dual Boot Install Issues

Hi, could you post the contents of the file /etc/fstab here? I suspect UUIDs are being used, and with some BIOSes that is an issue and you should replace the UUID with /dev/sda number for direct mount. From the terminal run: cat /etc/fstab As for the software manager issue. Please try from the termi...

Re: System Monitor info

Force Quit will allow you to kill an application that hangs. Click it, then left-click in the window of the application that hangs to kill it. (Right-click to abort killing anything.) The system monitor also allows you to kill applications, but I always setup Ctrl+Alt+Del to run Force Quit instead o...

Re: Have Dell Inspiron 530 want to upgrade graphics card Hel

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I am stuck in a position of catch 22. I neither have the inclination, nor skills I believe to change the power supply. There are no low power graphics card that near budget and are low power? I'm sure there are, but perhaps you would be better served asking that ...

Re: Using all 4GB of my RAM with 64-bit

You can install a 32 bits PAE enable kernel, this will allow you to address 4GB and more also. From the Live CD/DVD, please run following to check memory is detected correctly: sudo dmidecode | sed -n '/^Memory Device$/,/^$/p' Share the output here if you can't make heads or tails of it  Pleas...

Re: pSX is reported to work in Wine

You have to copy the .dll file from Windows to the C:\Windows\System folder that Wine made for you in your home folder. Then from the terminal start winecfg, go to the libraries tab and add an override for the .dll you need (telling Wine that it should use this .dll instead of handling its functions...

Re: live view

1. If everything is working from the Live CD/DVD, you can expect it to work also after installation. (That is one of the purposes there is a Live CD/DVD--to test compatibility with your hardware before installation). 2. During installation of Mint 9, you can choose to "use entire disk" (or something...

Re: Have Dell Inspiron 530 want to upgrade graphics card Hel

For your memory, open a terminal (find it in Menu) and run the following command. Give your password when asked (while typing no characters will appear, this is normal). Please put the output here, we can recommend memory then (probably you need DDR2 SDRAM at 800 MHz): sudo dmidecode | sed -n '/^Mem...

Re: init not found

Check in the BIOS if your harddisk is still detected. Often the BIOS also has an option to do a self-test on the harddisk or to access the SMART data from the harddisk (SMART is built into most harddisk, where they monitor their own health and report if they are breaking down).
