Hello from a new Mint user!

Hello all, I thought it was time for an introduction. I've just installed Linux Mint 2 weeks ago, after 5 years with Ubuntu and a short venture into Fedora, and must say I'm as happy as a happy kid who has already seen the pile of wrapped gifts he will get to happily unwrap for his birthday the next...

Re: Mint 11 updates

Open Update Manager, go to Edit -> Preferences, and put a checkmark in the column Visible? next to level 4 and 5. Now you will see these updates in Update Manager also, though they won't be installed unless you specifically checkmark them. At least you know now in the Update Manager also that a kern...

Re: Mint-menu is acting weird

This may work to clear up the separators. Indeed, I also can not move or remove them from the menu. For this you need to open Terminal (find it in the menu). First, make a backup of the file you are about to edit: cp ~/.linuxmint/mintMenu/applications.list ~/.linuxmint/mintMenu/applications.list.bac...

Thanks Bob E, I just completely forgot that was there. Sometimes there are easier ways to achieve the same thing, and you just stumble along with the one way you could remember :D

Re: web videos freezing..

Does the problem happen always for a specific video, or only sometimes? If it happens always, please share a youtube link to that video. This may be related to race condition on memory. How much memory and swap do you have in your machine? Run the following from Terminal (find it in menu) and post o...

Re: HDMI Issue

Hi, do you also have a normal monitor that you can attach so you have dual monitors (the normal one on VGA, and your TV on HDMI)? If so, please attach both, reboot and run from Terminal (find it in menu):

Code: Select all

xrandr -q
And post the output here.

Please also run and post output of:

Code: Select all

Re: Can't move windows

Hi, you can reset Compiz settings to post-installation default with (from the Terminal): gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz You can start gconf-editor to look up other paths that you may want to reset to post-installation default. For example, Cairo Dock (but I don't know the path for that, ...

Re: black screen. gdm wont load

What specifically did you do to "set [your] laptop up to have a second monitor?" To analyze the issue, it may help to see boot messages. If an error is shown, either take a photo and post here or type the information. To get boot messages to show, follow the advice here http://forums.linuxmint.com/v...

Re: Katya Gnome update issues...

Hi, for this you will need to use the Terminal (find it in your menu). I ran "apt-cache search kpat", am I correct in assumption that you mean the kpat which has solitaire card games? To uninstall this run: sudo apt-get purge kpat I'm not sure this will solve the Software Manager issues. Perhaps goo...

Re: how do I format a flash drive with linux mint?

Open Software Manager and install GParted. Next, insert your USB stick and start GParted (it will ask for your password as it is an administrative tool). In the top right hand of the window, select your USB stick in the selection box (it is probably the last one, but check the size noted there). Now...

Re: export bookmarks from IE to Ubuntu 11.04

Easiest is to install Firefox on Windows, let it import bookmarks from IE when it asks for that, and setup Firefox Sync on Windows. Then just also setup Firefox Sync on Linux, with the same account, and you have access to your bookmarks there. With Firefox Sync you can access your bookmarks from any...

Re: invest applet can not add to panel

I tried this, and get the same result in Linux Mint 11. Retesting on Linux Mint Debian Edition showed it to work without problems. Running "/usr/lib/gnome-applets/invest-applet" from the terminal, gives the following error: 2011-07-17 07:31:42.409156: ERROR: Could not load the stocks from /home/vinc...

Hi, you know about Wine's Application Database? There you can look up the support for any Windows application and how to run it on wine. Ah. You can just go into Software Manager (directly in the menu), type Skype to search, and click to install it. You will find that most software can directly be installed from the Software Manager, and you don't need to go to any website and try to figure out the correct file to download. Just open...

Re: Microsoft contributes a lot of changes to Linux kernel 3

As a Linux Mint desktop user what do Microsoft's changes do for me? As I read the article, all these changes were bugfixes to Microsoft's HyperV virtualisation interface driver, which has suffered from bugs for past 2 years. Good that that they are fixing some of those bugs. But this is only of inte...

Re: External Monitor resolution not recognised

There is two ways to go about this, one is to run your script automatically on startup. The other is indeed to write a xorg.conf. Failing the one, you can use the other :D To automatically run the script at startup, go to the terminal and do the following. mkdir ~/Scripts gedit ~/Scripts/fix-resolut...
