Re: Linux friendly printer.

I have no specific printer to recommend, but HP has very good supported drivers. You can check printers for compatibility with Linux. For HP see here entries under "Perfectly": http://www.openprinting.org/printers/manufacturer/HP You can look up other printers / manufacturers also: http://www.openpr...

Re: Best Filesystem for a SSD?

Whoops, sorry  If there are no lines following "Enabled Supported:" with details, then you do not have TRIM support. Your SSD does not have TRIM support. Your GRUB should read (only change from your output is to put elevator=noop within the last quote): GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRU...

Re: CD/DVD

No you can't just copy the DVD to the USB stick, that won't work. Use Software Manager to install unetbootin. That application does all the work for you to install an ISO image onto a USB stick and make it bootable. I'm not sure if you can copy from DVD to USB stick, but have a look.

Re: Clock shifted by timezone value

Instead of having Linux use local time, you can also switch Windows to use UTC: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuTime#Make%20Windows%20use%20UTC And I suggest you install NTP to keep Linux time synchronized with internet servers. There is a front-end to NTP you can use to configure it: sudo a...

Re: Why my folder /var/log is too big?

You can delete them, but perhaps you should investigate what is wrong here? Especially the .err logging--what errors is it giving that need your attention?

By default (at least on Katya) logrotation is active and your logfiles should not get this big.

Re: Best Filesystem for a SSD?

No clue about Cr48 bit. But for blaming Ext4 for the problems you mention, you should not listen to your friend on technical issues  Ext4 is excellent for use on SSD. Onces Btrfs it stabilizes that FS is the future, but for now Ext4 is the cream and rock solid stable. There are three main thin...

Re: Trying to list folders by data size not amount of items

Open the terminal and go to the folder where you have all the sub folders you wish to count. (Or browse to that folder, right-click and choose "Open in Terminal".) Once there, run the following command: du -ck * | grep -v \/ | head -n-1 | sort -n This gives you the sorted list of folders, each prece...

Re: Organising the window list on the taskbar

Welcome to Linux Mint! And, uh, yeah... Just drag (click & hold) a window icon and drop (release) it on another window icon to have it insert there on the windows list. :D

BTW this is the same way you rearrange your favorite applications in the mintMenu.

Re: start menu font size

Weird, I can't find this. Text size is indeed not influenced by Appearance settings, or by icon size. BTW perhaps get some search results looking for mintMenu instead of start menu (latter is Windows).

Re: You aren't going to believe this...why my server problem

http://12.207.42.203:81 still gives a timeout. And the other two links give "server can not be found" error directly. I don't know what you are doing, but perhaps get some help. Are you missing some essential steps in the configuration :( I'm sorry I can not help on this.

On my clean Katya 64 bits install, it shows the following version for base-files package: $ dpkg -l | grep base-files ii base-files 5.0.0ubuntu28 Debian base system miscellaneous files Perhaps try the following: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: The infamous Dell mouse drift

Perhaps include the full path to xinput? The PATH environment setting at that point of boot may perhaps not include the xinput directory or something. Type "which xinput" on the terminal to get the full path.

Re: No grub screen after new install

I think you can follow the guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows#Recovery%20Using%20the%20Ubuntu%20Desktop/Live%20CD%20%28RECOMMENDED%29 You need the LiveCD for this. And as you are using Katya, you are using GRUB2 (version 1.99), which you need to know...

Re: Where can I find LM 10.10 for PowerPC

For the version you want, you can only get that on Ubuntu: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads . If you prefer to have something that looks like Linux Mint ( it isn't Linux Mint! ) you could try MintPPC, but that is a much older mix of Debian and Linux Mint. The website for that is http://www.m...
