Re: Mint is a terrible Linux desktop

Then again, all I have to do is remember how INTERESTING life with Windows XP was, and my boredom is cured! I really liked XP, which is why I didn't bother with 7/Vista/8/8.1 or - thank heavens - 10. Sometimes I do actually miss not regularly spending hours checking that all my software is up-to-da...

Re: forum no longer automatically subscribing me to my posts

Can't help you, linx255, but if it's any consolation: same here. Just tried austin.texas' suggestion re re-creating email notifs, will see if that helps. Think there's still 'server issues' as I sometimes see lines of error messages at the top of pages. Sh*t happens and I'm sure the guys who run the...

Re: Firefox not updated?

Sorted (I think)! Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 Your mention of Firefox not from the repositories reminded me that I'd installed Seamonkey, looks like it was that that did it (or, didn't do it). Removed it and re-updated Firefox, looks to be good. Thanks ...

Re: Firefox not updated?

Thanks for your continuing help, Cosmo. Tried re-installing via Synaptic, still says v42 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0 Being a Linux newb I stick with what's in the official repositories unless there's something I *really* want / want to try. Screenshot of update...

Ah, but if I go to this page re 43.0.1 it says, "Congrats! You’re using the latest version of Firefox." I really don't think I am, at least, not 43.0.1

Apologies for delay in responding. #1 no user.js file #2 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0 When I switched PC on and fired up Firefox there was a message in a box, said something along the lines of: "Update available but can't update as you don't have root access / f...

Firefox not updated? [SOLVED]

Firefox > Help > About Firefox says I have v42 installed, this page says I have an old version installed.

Yet if I go into Synaptic it says 43.0+linuxmint1+rosa is the installed version.

Any ideas?

Thanks for asking the question as I was wondering, too. Seems like a bit of unnecessary bloat to me, though maybe some will love it.

And thanks for the answer, Cosmo

Re: Which Linux Mint Distro to completely replace Windows?

I don't believe anything you say. Hmmm...that doesn't sound very fair to say. Let me tell you though, as a decorated war veteran and professional male model (when I'm not test driving prototype Lamborghinis) I too "work in IT". In all my 20 years of experience, I've seen many case studies...and no ...

Re: Linux..... too expensive for me (in time)

This is a p*ss-take, right? You work in IT and it's taken you 2.5 weeks to set Linux up "for everyday computing (browsing, emails)". This takes maybe a couple of hours and, as capivara said, you don't need any in-depth knowledge at all, let alone time to grasp it. Windows seems to work OK for you so...

Re: Teaching Linux Mint to Middle School Students

I would only say a few words about what Linux and open source are.... They probably won't care one bit and will find it very boring. That's at least what I have learned from giving Linux presentations. :) What does interest people, in my experience, is the practical side.Good luck! :) If they're hi...

Re: Chrome/Firefox not loading google websites

That's funny. I've started having firefox do this to me over the last couple days. Google searches just suddenly stop working. If you start typing something and hit enter you should get results. I type something, hit enter and just get a blank white page. Closing and the reopening Firefox seems to ...

Appreciate the post, kirman, as I'm getting the same problem. Don't feel competent to upgrade the kernel so I'll probably try Mate.

Re: How many people use Linux Mint?

Couple of thoughts: 1. As Mint tends to work 'out of the box' some users may find little or no need to use the Mint forums. 2. How many Windows users actually use an official Windows forum (as opposed to, say, an AV forum / Photoshop forum)? Probably a small number in comparison to the number of Win...

Re: What is a good Linux distro for the computer illiterate?

Mint jam? Sounds delicious but never tried it, nor every single Linux distro. I've tried a few distros, found Mint to be sufficiently painless. I'd think every distro/OS will offer updates, one way or another, so I can't see that any are totally set-it-and-forget-it. Mint LTS doesn't require a lot o...

Hey, I am really surprised that currently more longtime Linux users replied and voted here than newcomers to the Linux world OK, I voted.
