Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

My hope is that if Mint goes Gnome 3 as it ultimately appears it will, that every freakin tweak available comes with it, gnome tweak, ubuntu tweak, that ccss? whatever and anything else that can be thrown in, because Ubuntu 11.10 is the most unconfigurable (is that a word?) Linux version I've ever ...

AlbertP wrote:Yes but when you are alone, why care about that? You aren't always surrounded by other people. And you can also use the normal keyboard for the password and then close the laptop and use touch.
This would make a on-screen keyboard completely unnecessary....

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

You and linuxviolin are about the two biggest pessimists i have seen in the mint forums...relax and watch things "play out" and i am sure you will ultimately be very pleasantly surprised...and it's not all "doom and gloom" like you think... :) No, it's all installing applications to modify things t...

Re: Gnome 3.2 is out

The Gnome user survey 2011 is up and running: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=gnome_survey.
First reactions of the users can be found here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... px=MTAwMjY. The guys at Gnome.org should better duck and cover.....

And it's very easy to spy out your password with that on screen keyboard.

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

I installed Gnome Shell on Ubuntu 11.10, and now on login I have the choice of GNOME (Gnome 3 w/shell), Gnome Classic (with effects), Gnome Classic (no effects), and Ubuntu Desktop (Unity). I posted a screenshot in the Post Your Linux Mint Desktop thread, showing use of Cairo Dock w/OpenGL. So it s...

Re: On screen keyboard in Mint 12?

Great, now everyone can see your password when you enter it on screen.
What sense does this make on a desktop machine?

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

HardyH...i think what you are not getting is gnome2 is basically "dead" going forth...it will no longer be maintained and the switch to gnome3 is necessary...just as kde3 became kde4 and the kde fans cried at the time also...though at least kde didn't radically modify the basic desktop layout as gn...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

Gnome 3 fallback mode IS NOT A SMARTPHONE GUI. I hate smartphone GUI's like Gnome 3 Shell. But Gnome 3 without shell (fallback mode) is a nice desktop. The base behind G3 fallback is still Gnome 3, and G3 fallback does not have the functionality of G2, it's still G3. Sometimes, nice is not enough. H.

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

As you might already know, I'd vote for Gnome 3 with Mint Menu and a panel. Me too...gnome3 with panel on bottom and mint menu...same as it has always had except with gnome 3....i think that would be the best bet... why play with other variations? why even bother having two separate editions? Why G...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

Just read this: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), has been joined by rival OpenSUSE, which is jumping to GNOME 3 in its 12.1 beta (see farther below). Both projects have adopted the latest GNOME 3.2 release, which is said to have squashed many of the bugs of the original, while fixing a few of the m...

Re: Gnome 3.2 is out

Maybe in the fallback state we could have good options to work with, and about the boicot, a really don't think so... I see Gnome 3 with a bright future. About the "interface for noobs"... Well one thing is the way Gnome Team is doing the ergonomics in the interface, and other is the code that is b...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

As for a lot of settings, yes, one has to rely on gnome-tweak-tool for the time being - but it does a good job at managing themes, fonts, desktop, and extensions. GNOME3 is not for the users who like to customize and tweak every available setting - that's for sure - I think they're trying to distan...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

I keep hearing about a gnome 3 classic mode. Supposedly people have already tried this on Ubuntu 11.10 and it is supposed to be like gnome 2. Can anyone confirm this? I keep wondering if this is where Mint will end up, with some sort of tweaked gnome 3 that acts like gnome 2. I wonder if Main Mint ...

Re: Mint 12 with Kernel & Gnome 3!

Gnome 3 is and will always be way too dumbed down, unuseable and too functionality castrated to include it in any serious desktop orientated distro. Not that Fedora or openSUSE are serious desktop distros by any means. It's inevitable that we will have GNOME3 with LM12 - only thing left is ho...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

While I agree that the missing power off button in Gnome 3 is a bit odd (I had to add an extension to have a permanent power off button. They need to look at this imho), I cannot agree that Gnome 3 otherwise is "junk". I have been using it for about six months now on another distro and it is a real...

Re: Gnome 3.2 is out

The Gnome 3.2 shell tablet/touchscreen optimized toy computer environment for absolute noobs uses Mutter as window manager, you cannot use compiz with it, but you can use Gnome 3 fallback, the functionality limited Gnome 2 wannabe with compiz.
