Upgrading from Mint 11 standard to Mint 12 KDE

Hi, I currently have the standard edition of Mint 11 installed, but I'm considering upgrading to the KDE edition (when it's released) instead of the latest standard edition. Is the installation/upgrade process the same, and are there other things to look out for when switching? And I've never used K...

JACK and PulseAudio with dbus

I'm trying to use a program that needs JACK and it seems that it won't work well with PulseAudio because they both want control over the sound card. I've looked around and I found some solutions about enabling dbus support in JACK so that it can ask PulseAudio to release the card when JACK needs it,...

Re: Feeling disillusioned with Mint 12

I was quite interested to see Mint 12 and I tried it from the live CD on my laptop. My first impression of Gnome 3 was that it was very, very basic, it doesn't really seem to have any customisable features at all, it seems like it was made to work only one way, and I didn't like that at all. My bigg...

Re: compiling c

Adding the current directory '.' to your path is usually not a good idea for security reasons. The 'proper' alternative is to type './' before the name of the program you want to run. So if your program is called 'hi' then type: ./hi The reason for this is that scripts and other programs will often ...

Re: Cool'n'Quiet and automatic fan speed

I've now set the fan in the BIOS to run at half speed until the temperature goes above 50, and now it's much quieter, thank you! Could I safely allow it to run even slower, maybe even allow it to stop altogether if it's not needed? And I wonder how I can see the current fan speed from within Linux? ...

Re: Cool'n'Quiet and automatic fan speed

Ok, thank you for your explanation, I understand it a bit better now. My fan has 4 wires, black, blue, red and yellow so it should allow the scaling. Typing 'sensors' in the terminal gives me this: k10temp-pci-00c3 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +18.4°C (high = +70.0°C) I'm not sure if there should be ...

Re: Cool'n'Quiet and automatic fan speed

I'm not sure if I have that kind of fan. The fan came with the processor in the same box. I'll have to look in the BIOS though. I'm still a bit confused by Cool 'n' Quiet though. My laptop has an Intel processor and it has the same kind of automatic scaling in steps. So that makes me wonder if the s...

Cool'n'Quiet and automatic fan speed

I have an AMD Phenom processor which supports 'Cool 'n' Quiet'. I'm not sure how it works but I think it has something to do with reducing the CPU frequency when it's not being used much. But I thought Linux does that anyway, and I noticed that the frequency of my CPUs varies from 800 to 3200 MHz na...

Title bars are not updating with Compiz

Since installing Mint 11 I've noticed that the title bars of windows don't update when they should. For example, Firefox doesn't show the name of the site, and the same applies to other programs. Right now as I type this, the bottom panel says "Linux Mint Forums • Post a new topic - Mozilla Fir...

Re: Right alt is not working

I can set 'Right alt key never chooses 3rd level' but then I can't type special characters with it anymore. This seems like a strange oversight to me, especially since Windows handled it fine. Although Windows treated the right alt key as ctrl+alt in one for some reason.

Right alt is not working

I'm trying to use a program that uses the alt key for some things but the right alt is not working. The left alt works as it should. Left alt + F2 shows a 'Run Application' window, right alt + F2 does nothing. I'm using the US International layout with dead keys. I can type special characters like ®...

Re: My refresh rate won't go higher than 60Hz

I've managed to add a new mode with xrandr now, and the Monitors application in Mint will let me switch to it as well. So it seems to work right. Thank you for your help! I'm a bit surprised though because after I restarted, it still kept the new setting even though I thought xrandr was not permanen...

Re: My refresh rate won't go higher than 60Hz

I'm not sure if the graphics card is really the problem. I remember that Windows didn't properly detect the monitor either. I had to install a driver for it to know the monitor's capabilities. I'm guessing that Linux works the same way, and that I need to somehow tell it what the monitor can do. Wou...

My refresh rate won't go higher than 60Hz

I've just installed Linux Mint 11 64 bit and I'm using ATI's drivers for my Radeon HD5770. My monitor is an Iiyama Vision Master 1451, which is an older CRT monitor. I can select all the resolutions that the monitor supports, which is 1600x1200 at the highest. But I can't select any refresh rates ot...
