Re: Linux crashed twice in 2 weeks

It seems that many people are having freezes suddenly. I am, and I saw a few other topics here about it too.

Re: Unable to login after home deletion

You may not need to reinstall. If you delete the old home and delete its user from the system, then recreate the user, you should be able to log in again.

Re: Regular Freezing

This sounds suspiciously similar to the problem I've been having. I made a post about it too: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=98278 I was a little worried that it might be a hardware problem, but if others are having the same problem that would be unlikely, which is somewhat of ...

Re: What can I do when my system hangs completely?

It just happened again. It's getting quite worrying now... it happened maybe a few times in all those months since I first set up the computer and installed Mint, and now it happened three times in two days...

Re: What can I do when my system hangs completely?

It just happened again, and I tried ctrl+alt+sysrq+REISUB but nothing happened. The system is only a few months old so I don't think it broke so soon. It's also not overheating, it's only at 40 degrees. EDIT: dmesg only seems to show messages from the current session, which doesn't really help at al...

What can I do when my system hangs completely?

A few times now, my system just suddenly froze and stopped doing anything at all. The mouse cursor wouldn't move, keyboard shortcuts did nothing (not even ctrl+alt+backspace), nothing would respond, the screen was frozen too. I ended up pressing the reset button because it's all I could do. I've yet...

Re: Scroll wheel is slow? I cant find the option to increase

Maybe the KDE edition of Mint has it, I'm not sure. The problem is in Gnome, not in any specific distribution, so unless the distribution customised its version of Gnome to include that option, all distributions using Gnome will lack it.

Re: Scroll wheel is slow? I cant find the option to increase

This is a well known shortcoming of Gnome, but I'm not sure if there is a way to do it or even if they plan on making it fixable...

Re: how to learn using terminal?

You may also like The Linux Command Line. It's a book that's for sale but it's also freely downloadable as PDF, and it's very comprehensive right from the basics to very advanced things.

Re: installing

If you have a USB drive that's large enough, you can use that and save on a DVD. You'll need the program 'Unetbootin' to write ISO images to the USB drive.

I'm not quite sure but I think you could do it with the dd command. I wouldn't know how exactly though.

Font families in Gnome 2

In Linux Mint 11 (Gnome 2) there are a few fonts that have 'generic' names like 'sans' or 'monospace'. Are these actual fonts (I can't imagine!) or are they just alternative names for another font? And how do I find out which font this is, and change it?

Re: Online Security?

It's also impossible to hide your IP address online. Your IP address is used by other computers online, such as web sites, to know where to send their replies when you connect to them. Not sharing your IP address in those cases would be like sending someone a letter and saying 'please reply to me, b...

Re: Missing dynamically-loaded libraries for 32 bit program

I'm sorry maybe I used the wrong terms. As far as I know there are three kinds of libraries. Static libraries which are added to the binary itself; shared libraries which are in their own file, and are loaded when the program is; and dynamically-loaded libraries which the program itself asks to load...

Re: Software downloads

Hi, welcome to Linux Mint! To get a notification when someone replies, you can use the 'subscribe topic' feature. It should be at the bottom left of the page. I'm not quite sure what you'd like to know otherwise I'm afraid. Are you wondering what the proper place is to save your files? And where pro...

Missing dynamically-loaded libraries for 32 bit program

I use Mint 11 64-bits and I have a 32-bit program (Firestorm viewer for Second Life) that is available as a binary (or source), but not as a package and not in 64-bit either. It runs normally and there are no problems, but the program has some multimedia features that require extra libraries, partic...

Re: Stupid questions of a newbie

I haven't used Cinnamon myself and I'm waiting a while before trying it because I get the impression that even though it's getting along very well, it's still a little immature in some areas. And kostass123 seemed to feel unfamiliar with Gnome 3 so staying with Gnome 2 for now is probably a bit safe...

Re: Stupid questions of a newbie

If you are caught off guard by all the differences in Mint 12 with its Gnome 3 based desktop, maybe you'll like Mint 11 more. It still has Gnome 2 like Mint 9 did so it should feel much more familiar to you.
