Re: I need help compressing images to zip

If your pictures are already in a compressed image format like PNG or JPEG, compressing them with another program won't reduce their size any further, because they're already compressed. Compressing works by removing redundant information from a file (kind of like replacing 'aaaaaa' with '6a') but o...

Re: Slight Emergency!!! chmod -R 777 folder_namecd /

It's a good thing you didn't type sudo in front! (And now everyone knows why it exists!) I think the default permissions are 644 for files you create in your home directory, and 755 for directories. So you can try setting all your files and directories to that. After that you may need to fine-tune i...

Re: Increasing the size of the visuals w/o decreasing resolu

You could try to increase the screen's dpi setting somehow, that would cause fonts and such to be rendered using more pixels.

Re: LMMS wants to uninstall Wine 1.3 because of conflict

I'm using Mint 11 main edition and I'm trying the one from the repo. But there is no lmms-vst package; searching for both 'lmms' alone and 'lmms-vst' gives no package of that name in Synaptic. It's the 'lmms' package itself that depends on the 'wine1.2' package according to Synaptic's properties win...

Re: apt vs apt-get

It looks like 'apt' is a small Python script that calls apt-get and other programs. I'm not sure what it would be used for but it seems mostly for convenience.

Re: How can I keep track of when the internet goes down?

I don't know if there is a way to do this but I think it could be made into a shell script, by using the ping command and writing to a log file if there is no reply. I don't really know much about shell scripting though.

Some spammers fake emails so that it looks like they come from someone else. So just because others are receiving emails from you doesn't mean they were actually sent from your email address or from your computer.

But /media is normally a mounted filesystem so how would that affect how much space is left on the root filesystem?

Re: Make everything bigger

In the place where you can change fonts, there is also an option to change the DPI of the screen, that will make everything bigger or smaller, even icons and such.

Re: how to autostart firefox

You can, but you can't just type the file name because it's not a program. Instead you need to type the name of the program before it, like this, with Firefox for example to open a web page when it starts:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/firefox http://www.google.com

Re: how to autostart firefox

If you know the name of the program (or if you can guess it) then you can find the location of the program with the 'which' command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

which firefox
gives: /usr/bin/firefox

In most cases, the program will be in /usr/bin though.

Re: SQL Syntax error!!

Do you get this error on the website where you submit your work? If so, then the error isn't related to your computer at all, it's your school's servers that have a problem.

LMMS wants to uninstall Wine 1.3 because of conflict

I'm trying to install the LMMS package, which apparently needs Wine to work. But it insists on using Wine 1.2 instead of Wine 1.3 which I have installed. The problem is that Wine 1.2 conflicts with Wine 1.3, so I'm not able to install LMMS without downgrading Wine, which I don't want to do. Is there...
