Re: Intermittent 3g initialisation

Sorry for the late reply. I was thinking about installing Sakis to fall back on, I was going to do as you suggested and uninstall usb-modeswitch, but if that failed I would have been left without a functional web connection so Sakis would help for several reasons. I used Sakis in my previous mint in...

Re: Intermittent 3g initialisation

OK this has started happening again. On an unsuccessful startup where the modem wasn't initialised. (the output from the same command on a successful initialisation is in the post above) The output from dmesg from dmesg | grep -e "modem" -e "tty" [ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled The output from dm...

Re: Intermittent 3g initialisation

Thank you for help caribriz, much appreciated. I've enabled logging on the usb_modeswitch conf file but there is no log in /var/log/ as indicated in usb_modeswitch.conf in /etc. So I don't know why that is. I've verified that the conf file has been edited correctly so .... Anyway the fault hasn't ha...

Re: Intermittent 3g initialisation

OK
I still don't know if I'm even on the right track :? but I've enabled logging on the usb_modeswitch by editing the conf file in /etc

When I've got some details to compare from successful and unsuccessful startups I'll re-post.

Intermittent 3g initialisation

I have a 3g adaptor that has worked fine until the last few days. Now when I boot my system (LM12) the adaptor doesn't initialise and give me a chance to connect to the web more times than it does. The only way to get it recognise it as a modem is to reboot the system. It is detected when I lsusb bu...

Re: Log in screen messed up

Thanks for the reply rudyd
I tried a few things included what you'd mentioned with no success.

It was annoying the hell out of me seeing that screen so I ended up installing LM12.
Now I'm annoyed for a whole bunch of other reasons.

Log in screen messed up

My 5 year old daughter has seriously messed up my log in screen somehow. She can't or won't tell me what she did so I really don't know happened. The screen is now divided vertically, the left half is normal but the right side is black and has a few sets of dots in a triangle pattern that mov...

Re: Childrens reading application

Thanks Richy ^ I tried childsplay but some reason it won't run on my system, nothing happens when I try to start it. I use letters for my older kids and its a handy little app. lletters is OK for the alphabet, but one of the main philosophies to the method in the book I got the idea from is not to t...

Childrens reading application

I have been looking for a program that can be used to teach very young children to read. I've got Gcompris and that is great for my 5 year old but I can't find anything for my 2 year old. I taught my older kids to read with a method described in a book titled "teach your baby to read". Using the met...

Re: Format USB stick

I solved this problem I couldn't get any sense out of the software based on parted (almost all the standard mint partitioning software seems to be based on parted) as it seems to have a bug that can't deal with this problem. I installed testdisk and it allowed me to delete & rewrite the MBR and then...

Re: Format USB stick

Sorry to drag up an old thread. I'm having the same problems and a search turned up this thread so I thought I'd post it here. I have a 4 gb verbatim flash drive that crashes gparted I tried the command sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc1 which gives this output from the terminal mkfs.vfat 3.0.9 (31 Jan 2010) ...

Re: Is LMDE worth it?

MORE WWOOF CRAZINESS. Yesterday I felt frisky and using the live 201012 disk I pulled up Gparted. Took a look and decided that if I'm totally dead in the water why not have some fun. I never created a swap partition because I use a SSD so I did that. After running it the mount point for ML disappea...

Re: Is LMDE worth it?

I think LMDE is worth it (for me anyway) I have a multi boot system so a reliable system is only a click away if there are any serious problems that make LMDE unuseable. I love to "get under the bonnet" so to speak and sort out problems, it teaches me about the inner workings of the OS and gives me ...

Re: Release Date for Linux Mint 11 KDE

You may want KDE but if it isn't reliable then what is the point ? There has been a lot of people having problems with KDE on the suse forum and they can't really get much support for their problems, in some cases no-one even answers their questions. The KDE developers have some work to do to get it...

Re: Application installed - but how to run it?

You can create a launcher for the application that will launch it from the panel. To do that right click on the panel (taskbar) and select "add to panel" A window will open and then select the top option " custom application luancher" A dialogue box will open for you to create the launcher click on ...

Re: Application installed - but how to run it?

Many applications won't install anything on your menu, Linux has way too much to include everything on the menu. Most of your programs that install will be installed in the /usr directory, mainly in /usr/bin/ or they could be in one of the/usr subdirectories have a poke around in the /usr directory....

Re: Is LMDE worth it?

Have you tried typing control centre in the search field when you open the menu ? The gnome control center should come up on the right side of the menu. The control center can also be opened in a terminal by typing sudo gnome-control-center if the user is configured to have sudo rights If you are af...

Re: Is LMDE worth it?

I don't know about your monitor issues, I've seen updates cause problems in that area too. They "fix" things that are working and cause all sorts of problems. The wireless issue seems like it could be a hardware problem if it is doing it on linux and XP. Sometimes upgrades where a new kernel is conf...
