Re: scan plugin for libreoffice writer

It should already be able to do that. In Writer, click on "Insert" then "Picture" and select "Scan". Works for me.

Re: VLC moves video ahead of audio

I had the same problem until I upgrade to VLC version 1.1.12. This update included a new Pulseaudio plugin which is what I think fixed the problem. To get the latest VLC run sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade If you don't want to do this, you can adjust...

Re: Better use of 16:9 monitors

In many programs and all browsers I know of it is easy to go full screen when you need more space. Just press F11 and see what happens. To get out of full screen just press F11 again.

Re: Better use of 16:9 monitors

Some folks that like a lot of vertical area turn their monitors on their side and rotate the display 90 degrees. I understand this is popular with professional writers that like to be able to see more of the page they are working on.

Re: DONT DO IT....

What I do before upgrading is install the new distro on separate partition. That way you can see if everything works on your computer before committing to the upgrade.

Re: Important: Libreoffice damages a file

FOSS is not a program, I was just commenting that Scribus is a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) program.

Can't you just export your files to pdf using the LibreOffice export utility?

Re: Important: Libreoffice damages a file

Scribus is a very good desktop publishing program that is FOSS and in the repositories. I believe it will export to PDF. Might give it a look.

Re: Crazy! I can see wireless network but can't connect

I don't have a wireless connection to play with at this time, but I think you can release the IP by entering in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient -r
sudo service networking restart
Try it and let me know if it works. If not, I have another way to do it that is a little more complicated.

Re: Important: Libreoffice damages a file

I attend a conference every year which is mostly a three day series of power point presentations. We ran into this problem with MS Office last year with all of the presentations being borked by the the writer of the presentation upgrading to the latest MS Office. We are given all of the presentation...

Re: Important: Libreoffice damages a file

The problem is not with LibreOffice. The problem is with MS Office 2010. This problem with compatibility with MS Office 2010 is well documented. If a file created in MS Office 2010 is opened in another program and saved, MS Office 2010 will say the file is corrupted when trying to open it. This even...

Re: Printing over the air

I have found that using ipp instead of samba is a lot easier. In windows share the printer with ipp. then open a terminal Start>Run>cmd and enter ipconfig /all to find the IP of the printer. The on you Linux machine open the CUPS interface in your browser at http:localhost:631 and add the printer wi...

Re: Crazy! I can see wireless network but can't connect

Restart the router :!: :!: I should have suggested that first. What happens is your system remembers the last DHCP address you had, and tries to connect using that same IP address, which your router thinks is already in use. Restarting the router of course clears the memory in the router and once ag...

Run

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/wicd/wicd.log
in a terminal and copy and past the last 10 or 15 lines of the output in your reply.

Re: Crazy! I can see wireless network but can't connect

I suspect network-manager did not completely uninstall.

Try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge network-manager
Then

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart
Then see what happens.

Re: Best way to migrate Ubuntu 8.04 to Mint 11?

Hardy Heron (8.04) to Katya (11.04) is a huge jump. If you tried to copy all of your settings and files, a lot of stuff would be broken. I would suggest that you backup all of you documents and other personal files, then do a clean install of Katya. As Linux Mint comes with a lot of stuff installed ...

Re: What song are you listening to at the moment?

I have no idea what I am listening to at the moment, but whatever it is is coming from the other computer near mine and my 13 year old granddaughter is on that computer. Whatever it is I hate it. I think she plays this crap just to irritate me.
