Re: DistroWatch and Ubuntu

I see your point. Well, there's the Kubuntu forums, but I don't think Xubuntu has their own. It does seem to me that all the 'Buntus should be considered one distro, but I think they are technically unofficial spin-offs, not quite like the different Mint versions or Fedora spins, for example. Someo...

Re: DistroWatch and Ubuntu

@MALsPA I understand your point, and it may indicate that I am making too much of this. I know that the 'hit count' for Ubuntu would go up if all its 'children' were listed on one site as Linux Mint (and most other major distros) do. But, it could increase the 'hit count' for the *buntu family and d...

DistroWatch and Ubuntu

This is not intended to become an incendiary post. I am just very confused and looking for some unbiased input. My confusion is regarding DistroWatch and the handling of their Page Hit Ranking system. The most recent DistroWatch Weekly included reviews of 'Ubuntu and Kubuntu'. I have long taken exce...

Re: Desktop Linux less stable than OSX,.. and Windows?!

Isn't this like the old bar room (or living room...) arguments about Chevy being better than Ford or Babe Ruth being better than Mickey Mantle? There isn't a true answer here, but it makes for an interesting philosophical discussion. I pretty much fall into the 'Guru's' camp on this topic: 1> none o...

Re: How Sick Is This -- MS Attorneys Earning Their Paychecks

None of this discussion answers the basic question. Did the Android developers use Microsoft intellectual property without license and without permission? If so, they have to pay. If so, Microsoft is not screwing anybody. If so, somebody was screwing with Microsoft, and that is not smart. Open sour...

Re: mint 10 kde flaky or what?

An interesting blog on Slackware's problems with KDE 4.x. Hope you find it pertinent to this discussion; it puts a specific technical view on the problems associated with any distro that wants to get KDE to 'just work': http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/whats-cooking/ No personal opinions on this, I'm...

@remoulder,

I was pretty sure that was the answer, but a lazy man can always hope  ...

An hour or so extra is not too bad to ensure a good install.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

Linux is an organic OS -- with 500 or so distributions, each marching to their own beat, it can't be compared in any way with Microsoft, or Apple... Not to nit pick ... But believe them to have much in common. With the main common ground being, they are all operating systems. Personally think Linux...

Changing From LMDE to Linux Mint 11 (SOLVED)

I am considering a change from LMDE to Linux Mint 11. My question is regarding the installation process. My hard drive (with LMDE only on it) is configured with 3 primary partitions: 1) /, 2) /swap, and 3) /home. Can I install Linux Mint 11, and maintain my /home partition with all its files and con...

Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop

This is a very complicated topic. Professional versus personal user, commercial versus 'free' distributions; too many moving parts! Linux is an organic OS -- with 500 or so distributions, each marching to their own beat, it can't be compared in any way with Microsoft, or Apple. There is no central d...

Re: My "Hat's Off to Linux Mint"

I went to distrowatch.com about 5 minutes ago, scrolled down to 'Page Hit Ranking' and updated it to 'Last 7 Days'. The results I got were: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu combined -- 3139 Linux Mint -- 2925 I bring this up, not to start a flame war, or suggest that 'my distro is better than y...

Re: LMDE XFCE Menu content

Hello all, I don't know whether this will help or hurt -- you know the 'your mileage may vary' warning, but there is a menu editor that has been created for LXDE (currently in beta) that is supposed to work for other window managers as well: http://lxmed.sourceforge.net/index.html It looks quite a b...

Re: Free Software/Open Source

Hi people, I was reading some stuff about novell's last deal with micro$oft, slowly(not so) becoming a puppet, and a weapon against OSS at all, then I felt scared and started searching about and found that Gnome has microsoft dirt too, something about .net and apps being just clones, then I got eve...

Re: Ubuntu Changes, Will Linux Mint as Well?

Mereyub, I think this may help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux, it explains a lot about how Linux came about, originally developed by Linus Torvalds who is still working on the kernel development. Because it is free and open source and governed but the license known as the GPL (GNU General Publi...

Re: Windows 7

Hi Hawkeye, What version of Windows 7 did the touchpad have? I ask because I have a Gateway computer that came with Win7 Home Premium and it did not come with software for the webcam. This makes me think the software was something the computer manufacture added instead of being part of Win7. Donec,...

Re: Windows 7

I was recently out wish-shopping for my next computer (read absolutely can't afford, but REALLY want). My reading had driven me to look at touch screens -- that seems to be the direction technology is taking us, either expectantly or kicking and screaming no -- so I went to my local large technology...
