Re: Root account timeout

How can I set a logout for the administer account after say, 5 minutes of no activity? Basically, if you're still running Synaptic, this doesn't help. There's still activity: you're running a persistent process. If it would have worked, it would probably also log you out of your session after 5 min...

Re: administrator privileges required creating a truecrypt v

Hya Stonetrek,

Which password are you entering? As Truecrypt is trying to create or mount the volume with sudo, it's asking you for your own password, not the one for root or for the encrypted partition.

Re: Mint logs me off randomly on t500

Agree with kabads. It probably not the manager logging you off, but X crashing and restarting, with a result you being presented a login-screen.

You can also check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for messages from X.

Re: GoogleAdds tells my there's a newer version for IE...

Maybe the extent of targeting is limited to geo-location and not to UA string? Exactly, so who/what do I contact to hand him/her/them the idea to extend the targeting? Guess it's just a common assumption that everyone's using newest version of Windows instead of checking if they're using another OS...

I've been looking at this banner for quite a while now: http://imgbin.org/images/5845.png Where/who can I send an email telling them to check the user agent in their scripting? Seeing the same in other websites telling people they must upgrade to IE9 for a better experience, even though their Window...

I know what you mean :)

apt uses "dist-upgrade" for that.

Re: updating??

Hello mr. tooth :) "apt-get update" only updates the lists with package-information, it's not intended to 'do' more :) You need "apt-get upgrade" for that! That's why you see this so very often: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade "&&" means "if true" (i.e. "if successful"), so it will run t...

I have no idea on how to help you, sorry, but I do think you should remove your email-address from the post!

Not a matter or privacy, that's your own choice, but more a matter or spam :)

Re: 3 year linux user

Hya dave! Welcome on the forums, hope you can add some flavour to it! :) Regarding the workspaces, from what I can tell Gnome3 always adds 1 more than the amount you currently use. So if you move an application from WS1 to WS2, Gnome will automagically create a 3rd, etc, etc. If you want to rever th...

Re: How to make the terminal autostart at startup

Not trying to intrude on anything, as gnome-terminal is great to work with, but maybe you would like to check out guake . It's a process that will always run in the background and is accessable by merely pressing F12 (default, can be changed) and be done with it pressing the same key :) Using it for...

Re: LMDE: Command 'ifconfig' is available in '/sbin/ifconfig

sudo ifconfig works, is that expected behaviour? I ask as typing in '/sbin/ifconfig' works too. Surely if it was expected behaviour I should get an error relating to needing sudo when I type 'ifconfig' Hya, 2 different things mate, one requires root to run, other doesn't know where to find the exec...

Suggestion: Try not re-using the partitions . . delete 'em all to free space, and re-create them all. Feels really strange that this should apply, even more so if they're on a LVM. Could you explain please? @the"old"fellow, looking at my /etc/fstab, / gets mounted with option "errors=mount-ro" so t...

Re: Does Linux Mint intend to support Gnome 2.x long term?

If I am unhappy with it though, will LM continue to support LM11 and previous versions? No, they're not extending support because 1 person wants them to :) As you can see in the FAQ , there is a default period of 1,5 years for support on regular releases, and 3 years on so-called Long Term Support ...

You didn't answer either of his questions Habitual. buteman, From what I've read in the last couple of minutes it comes down to a matter of taste. I've never used curl, and only ever used wget a couple of time to add pgp-keys to apt :P However, with what I' ve seen here for instance, my pick would b...

Re: Terminal: Remembering commands?

Bash remembers by default indeed. The commands are stored in a file called .bash_history and resides in your home-directory, you can view it in either a text-editor like gedit or geany, or through the command cat ~/.bash_history This file will be written to during log off, and if your file is empty ...

New search-Kid in town: YaCy

Just found this article , which tells us about a new release: a peer-2-peer search engine backed by the FSFE, called YaCy (pronounced "Ya See"). You can run the software on your machine, effectively helping "the grid" to run the queries. Seems like a great initiative, I really hope it will succeed! ...

Re: Installation on an ultrabook with a hard drive and an SS

Hi Kenmac, I don't know if and how this combination will work to be honest. There are optimization-settings for using an SSD, which may then cause issues with the regular HDD? I made notes when I installed an SSD in my netbook . Disregarding that for a moment, my personal idea would be the following...
