Re: Remote desktop over ssh?

ah, alright. Well, sorry to say, I've never set this up myself, only read about the matter :) Every platform seems to have its pros and cons, but more examples of these would be FreeNX , or something else mentioned on this page . There's not too many linux-servers outther it seems. Regards, Anakin

PERL and BASH - Find packages with apt-cache and dpkg-query

So, Last weekend (and the weeks before :P) I was muzing on the fact that yum ("the apt-get for RedHat-based distros") is so much cleaner and intuitive than apt, especially the package-searching. I put my thoughts into IRC, which gave me some answers from chattr and glebihan. With these under my arm,...

Re: Obtaining the username in a root script

Annakin - but it does work in straight su (no -): molly2@n5010 ~ $ myuser=$USERNAME molly2@n5010 ~ $ echo $myuser molly2 molly2@n5010 ~ $ su Password: n5010 molly2 # echo $myuser n5010 molly2 # myuser=$USERNAME n5010 molly2 # echo $myuser molly2 n5010 molly2 # Yes, I tested that in my example as we...

Re: Obtaining the username in a root script

Work-a-round, if it works initially, then set your own variable from the info held in $USERNAME sort of: myuser=$USERNAME This will not work using "su -", as tested by myself [anakin@stormbird ~]$ echo $USERNAME anakin [anakin@stormbird ~]$ su - Password: [root@stormbird ~]# echo $USERNAME [root@st...

Re: Zeitgeist Datahub

Maybe this article may explain it better.

Basically, instead of knowing the exact location of a certain file, you can look up which files you had opened 5 minutes ago (say, prior to the reboot) and open files from there.

Re: Remote desktop over ssh?

You cannot start a remote desktop session over SSH, they are 2 different beasts and protocols :) You can use Windows rdp by installing something like here , as an example the SuSe install is explained here . What is it you need to do? Why is VNC not an option? Do you get any errors using SSH? How do...

Re: Install downloads language packs

I'm installing Mint 12 from DVD with a slow internet connection, and I wonder why it's been downloading all the language packs for the last hour. Am I going to need all of them at the same time? Wouldn't it be faster to download the ones I am likely to want? The ones I ask for? You can skip them in...

Re: switching application through ALT+TAB is long

Nice rig! I agree, the hardware shouldn't be an issue here :P It appears as if Metacity is the cause here, as seen in here and here . From what I filtered from the topics it seems Metacity renders screens on the "client" side, so not inside of X itself, when you press Alt-Tab, which slows down the p...

Re: totally full reset of firefox

Firefox setting are saved in your home-directory, running the following command in a Terminal will rename the directory and effectively reset Firefox mv ~/.mozilla ~/.org_mozilla You can also do it from Nautilus, by using menu View -> Show hidden files (or just pressing Ctrl+H) and then rename the d...

Re: 32bit Oneiric kernel survived a reformat with 64bit Lisa

If you want to change the boot flag, you need to change the hard disk, not the partition: sudo fdisk /dev/sda As long as you don't use "w" (write to disk) nothing should be lost. I'm sorry, but this goes over my head, I may know how to identify but I surely cannot solve it. My personal course of act...

Kilz, you're correct, but didn't answer his question: No, adding an unmanaged switch will not change the way your network behaves. :)

Re: Why can't I skip installing language packs anymore ?

Just a comment: All of us do not speak english .. Then those who don't can install those (in my opinion) additional packages, it's a nicer solution than forcing the native english speakers to wait longer, use additional bandwidth (some countries and/or providers still uphold data-limits) and...

Re: pre-installed vmware mint available for download?

Hi Peter, Not sure, but why would you need any? Simplest way test this thing would be to download the .iso, link it to the CD-ROM of a virtual machine with say 1-2GB RAM and boot from the "CD-ROM" into a live session. You don't even have to define a Hard drive for the virtual machine. That way you c...

Hi ozgta, I found this topic , which possibly holds this solution: cd /var/cache/apt/archives dpkg -i --force-overwrite <<all_package_names_listed_at_the_bottom_of_error_output>> dpkg --configure -a Replace "<<all_package_names_listed_at_the_bottom_of_error_output>>" with the package name that comes...

On my Mint11 I can find it in Menu -> Administration -> Update Manager

But the icon in the systray is faster I guess :)

Re: components of 32bit Oneiric survived a fresh install of

Hya, welcome to the boards! note: Posting a "uname -a" from the LiveDVD is abundant and confusing, as that's the kernel of the DVD, not the one you're having problems with! :) My guess for now would be that you already had a separate mount-point for /boot and you didn't format it during install, the...
