Re: My computer's bandwidth has frightenly skyrocketed!!!!!!

Hi jmon, This could be (unexpected) behaviour of one of the harmless packages that you use. You could do a bit of bandwith monitoring while you use your computer? I used "iftop" myself before, rather like it. Especially because the package is only 32KB in size, Waaahey!! You install it using t...

Re: How to reduce font size of menu text entries?

Hi peter, Next time provide a bit more information please, like which version you have installed and which Desktop Environment (Gnome 2 or 3, XFCE for instance). For now I'll assume that you use Mint11 with Gnome2. The font-sizes can be found in Menu -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Tab Fonts. Change...

Re: Resident Linux Idiot Can't Figure Out How To Play .wma

Skimmed through the threat, so may have missed something here and there, so maybe redundant, but it you may want to consider "just" recoding the .wma to ogg or mp3? http://www.mygnulinux.com/?p=56 You'll need a package called "ffmpeg" (which is most likely already installed, or else easily done so w...

Re: switching application through ALT+TAB is long

Ooof, this can happen because of a LOT of things.... As far as I know, there is not throttling being done by your Desktop Environment (DE), that would just be silly. So most likely it's either a lack of power of the hardware, or no drivers being installed hence the CPU needs to do the calculations w...

Re: .ogg and Windows stubbornness

hi tpprynn, What kind of issues with filenames do you encounter? Personally I try to stay away from stuff like ' " ( ) ` as much as possible (also in combination with letters, so no Ç è ĩ ø for instance) as any given OS might run into problems at some point. I stick to regular letters and underscore...

Re: system time over the Internet?

I noticed that the system time at my computer seems to be 1 minute behind. I thought that Linux obtains the current time from some time servers? Or should I change some settings in order to allow this? (I tried to search the forum for this topic, but both "system" and "time" were ignored as too com...

Re: Linux kernel 2.6.38 - major power usage increase

Touched on this subject before, thought I'd make a post here as well. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=84877 Basically, there's a bug in some kernel-versions, 2.6.37 and up, and 3.x My last post in that topic links to this article , which states that the problem is identified and sho...

Re: deleted wifi and battery icons/applets. HELP

I deleted these two things, kind of by accident. I turned on the computer and it said it was having trouble loading them so I clicked "Delete" not knowing what they were. How do I get them back? You'll have to be a bit more specific :) Which install, which window manager? For now I'll assume that y...

Re: Problem with apt-get on my home network

There are too many variables here to be completely confident about either of the following possibilities: either 1. the repository was down when you were trying to update from home or 2. your dns isn't working on your home network, hence the couldn't resolve errors. Is this the only time this has o...

Re: Is Linux Socialistic?

No. There is no political system that can relate to Open Source, it's a society (with sometimes a bit of politics involved). There are people with good ideas, people with skills and supporters, most of the time combining (2 or even 3) out of 3. Use what you like. If you don't, improve it. If you can...

Re: A dual-core PC the size of a large USB thumbdrive...

That just blows me away. I've always been amazed that we've been using computers recently that back in the 50's and 60's took up whole rooms to provide the same computing power. One that will fit in a matchbox is just too much. I know!! :) Can you imagine going to a presentation, carrying n...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

The biggest reason I've given up on Linux so many times over the years is that I know too much about DOS and Windows. This. It requires a certain mindset. In my opinion Linux is easier to learn for someone that has never worked with computers, than for someone that has worked with a different OS be...

According to this article, the problem is identified and should be solved, but maybe not soon. Kernel 3.2 has been feature-frozen, so likely will not be implemented till 3.3.

Cheers,

Re: How do I remove Linux Mint 11 from my computer?

Don't you get either a Format or Delete option after you click "Drive options (advanced)"?

That error makes it sounds as if you click "next" to install windows on a partition that is formatted as (most likely) ext4.

Re: How do I remove Linux Mint 11 from my computer?

I've installed Linux Mint 11 on my Acer Aspire Timeline 4810 TZ, but I can't get comfortable with it. Tried to install Windows 7 back on the computer (booting from cd), but it can't use the partitions created by Linux. Can it be explained to me very carefully how to delete the partitions or uninsta...
