Re: Mint Unity?
I have tried out unity on mint, but normally I use MATE or Gnome shell with mgse. From what I've heard, and this might be one of the reasons why mint doesn't use unity by default, unity is not very customizable, so I don't know if you can change the dash icon. I'm interested if they bring customizat...

Re: Notifications & Desktop Shortcuts
For docky, open the application that you want to add to it and right click the icon in docky and select pin to dock or something of the sorts. I don't have docky installed currently so I can't directly quote it. Hope this helps

Re: Notifications & Desktop Shortcuts
I don't know how to remove the notification bar, but to add desktop shortcuts, log out, select "gnome classic" from the drop down menu (the button is a gear) next to your username in the login menu, and in there you can add icons to your desktop which will still be there when you log back ...

Re: MATE - Mint 12
Although I don't know why Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work, but logging out using the mint menu or pressing Alt+Print Scrn+K should work. Then select Gnome/Gnome Classic from the drop down menu next to your username in the login screen.

Re: How to get Mint 12 to look more like Mint 9?
I don't know about the boot related things, but if you go to the login screen and click the gear next to your username and select "MATE" from the drop down menu and login, you login into a Gnome 2 desktop. The theme and menu are preinstalled (although you have to select the theme from the ...

Re: MS Publisher 98
As I said, only some versions work. I know that Publisher is very expensive, but if you really need it, you could buy a newer version that does work. On the replacement side, I am fairly new to Linux, so I don't know too many apps, and I know of none that open publisher files. But again, I don't kno...

Re: Mint 12 & xfce
I usually install the xfce4 package, but the above probably works (I know it does in Ubuntu, but I've never actually tried in mint)-my Lisa vbox install is really slow b/c I don't have hardware virtualization capacity, so I can't actually get to synaptic atm. Linux Mint also has an lmde xfce version...

Re: MS Publisher 98
This is a question that I have also had. I know that you can run some versions of publisher under wine, but I haven't found (or looked much) for a native linux program which can open them.

Re: Why is everyone using Gnome 3?
MATE is a fork of gnome 2 which allows you to run gnome 2 and gnome 3 on the same machine. Also, mint uses the "mint gnome shell extensions" to make gnome 3 look and act more like gnome 2. To answer your overall question, everyone (who is using gnome) is using gnome 3 because gnome 2 is no...

Re: Loyal LinuxMint fan here, I really don't like LinuxMint
I think by Mint 13 and/or 14, mgse will become more like gnome 2 and everything (Ubuntu, Gnome Shell, Mate, MGSE) will become more stable, especially considering LM 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) is an LTS release. So until then, you can run Mint 9/10/11/LMDE (until gnome shell enters the latest repos) ...

Hello
I am fairly new to linux (been using it for about 4 months), and have recently found linux mint. I am very impressed with it and I would like to thank the devs for making such a great distro - especially with mgse for gnome shell and including mate. Also, thanks to everybody on the forums who have h...

Re: Creating a start link in main menu
What version of Linux Mint are you running? For <11, you right click the icon on your desktop and click move to trash to delete it from your desktop and right click the icon in the mint menu and click add to favorites to add it to the mint menu favorites. For 12, I believe that to add/delete icons, ...

Re: Release date Mint 12 without Gnome 3
Mint 12 comes with Mate, which is a fork of gnome 2, which you can select in your login screen by clicking the gear in your login screen to the right of your name. Mate will be there only if you installed from a dvd. If not, you have to install mint-meta-mate (I think that's the name), which is not ...

Re: Poll: The future look of Gnome Shell in Linux Mint
I believe Clem is working on that for mint 13 and will also be porting the original mint menu to mgse :D For Mint 12 i am temporarily getting around the 2 panel situation by using the neat extension from the gnome 3 website that auto hides the top panel....it works great and restores the top space ...

Re: Poll: The future look of Gnome Shell in Linux Mint
I agree with the other posts that mint should have one bottom panel. If you look around the forums and through the blog comments, you will find the two panels a major complaint. I think that one panel would further help gnome shell with mgse look like gnome 2. Personally, I find the top panel to be ...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread
Here is what I have been able to do with MATE: Unfortunately, the windows list extension doesn't work for me (Not the mgse one, the actual gnome mate one). It says that it is there when I right click it, but no windows show up. It might be the transparency, but whenever I have to authenticate someth...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread
Here is an interesting thing that I discovered about the mgse menu: You can edit the picture and text by opening a terminal and typing sudo gedit /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/menu@linuxmint.com/extenion.js Then change let icon_file = icon_path + "menu.png"; on line 264 to let icon_fil...

Not yet, and I'm dont have access to my Linux mint 12 computer right now so I can't try it at the moment. How would you edit the mint-z theme to get reflection to work?
