Installing Virtual Box on LMDE3 [SOLVED]

I don't presently have VirtualBox installed - but VirtBox is not in the Cindy repositories. I could just download software from Oracle - but apparently Debian have problems getting a decent stable version from Oracle which suggests that bypassing Debian would corrupt LMDE3 (which is substantially bu...

Shouldn't Firefox be a Cindy version?

Out of curiosity, I was comparing the apt and apt-get ways of presenting information:- apt policy firefox firefox: Installed: 60.2.0esr~linuxmint1+betsy Candidate: 60.2.0esr~linuxmint1+betsy Version table: *** 60.2.0esr~linuxmint1+betsy 700 700 http://mintlinux.mirror.wearetriple.com/packages cindy/...

Re: (LMDE 3) Bug: recovery boot unusable due to disabled root account

The first thing I did after the upgrade (due to needing to add some kernel options to solve a problem) was to try a recovery boot. It worked. I could log into root & the password hadn't changed. I don't know if LMDE2 assumed that root was disabled or had an unknown password; I didn't want that! So I...

Re: Nvidia two monitor setup

There is a nvidia-xconfig package in the repositories which provides the nvidia-xconfig program. I have this package installed on my PC (single screen setup) and it created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and a driver upgrade and everything works fine. The man page lists dozens of options. However, the de...

Re: Nemo - non-contrasting panes in double pane view [SOLVED]

Thanks @smurphos!
Fixed.

I've always previously used default themes with default borders, icons & controls etc (all Mint-X).
But changing just the "controls" tab to Mint-Y fixes the nemo problem.
Everything else appears pretty much unchanged.

Nemo - non-contrasting panes in double pane view [SOLVED]

Previously, LMDE2 nemo in double pane view showed the inactive pane shaded & the active pane on a white background. But LMDE3 nemo shows both panes equally as white backgrounds, which makes it hard to tell which is the active pane. Is this something I can fix via configuration or is it a nemo or Cin...

How many kernels should I have?

I upgraded from LMDE2 -> LMDE3 and both my existing kernels were removed & replaced with a single 4.9.0-8-amd64 kernel.

Since I'd really like to maintain 2+ bootable kernels is there a safe way to install an additional bootable kernel?

Re: Unable to boot LDME3 on Thinkpad X230i under UEFI

Why did you create the partitions - the LMDE installer would have done it automatically, with guidance from you.

(Assuming your BIOS is UEFI).

LMDE3 upgrade broke my "various"

Did the upgrade from LMDE2 -> LMDE3 1. Couldn't boot without the kernel crashing. Apparently kernel: sp5100_tco : I/O address 0x0cd6 already in use is a well known Debian fault in the kernel and affects several AMD motherboards. I fixed it by blacklisting sp5100_tco (I don't what this does to anyth...

Lot of Beta & test software on that machine.

Why Yandex???

Delete Facebook - I did.
You seem to have some spyware on your machine.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

It sounds like once a successful upgrade from LMDE2 -> LMDE3 has taken place (including the systemd thing) then that would be an optimum time to try switching to Debian, assuming that is desirable. I'm only considering this because LMDE2 is apparently a low priority project and I assume the same wil...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

What is the difference (at the application level) between LMDE3 (Cinnamon) and Debian [Stretch] (Cinnamon)?
Is it just purely visual or is different software involved?

If a new stable Debian (after Stretch) is released, will a new LMDE follow in a few months or so?

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

Note: I use Debian stable repos only. When the next stable (Buster) switches over, I run apt-update as usual, fix any bugs, and clear out any cruft before switching to the newest Mint repos. Is there a recomended automatic cruft detector for LMDE1 upgraded to LMDE2 (hopefully upgraded to) LMDE3? :)

A timeline implies that there are multiple targets for reaching ultimate LMDE3 - is this the case?
