Re: ATI Raedon 9600 driver problems

Instead of booting in single mode, boot up to where you get the black screen, then try CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to tty1 console, then login as your user name and password and run the command. You can also look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what might have happened, or post output here...

Re: Can't run Mint 13 from USB

The "linux" line. You can remove quiet splash, then add in the alternate text. It will probably until you get whatever graphics drivers will work with your system. You can try as above to install the restricted driver, if any. If you need more help try the command; ixni -G AND lspci -vv Also, this l...

Re: Panic occurred, switching back to text console

You can try to install a different driver and blacklist the currently used one. (you can try the "restricted driver" choice first) Graphics overview inxi -G Discovery; http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Graphics_drivers blacklist http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=166624 Also, this log might help ...

You might have to blacklist the current graphics driver, then use a different one.

Re: how to install grub in a partition and not mbr ?

thanks i guess long story short i need to use --force and it is safe ? No, not really, use chattr, core.img needs to be immutable or you can run into issues later because core.img location can change because GRUB uses blocklists to locate it! (unless the installer did this already, but I highly dou...

Re: Panic occurred, switching back to text console

Did you try "Start in compatibility mode"? Also, you might want to ask in the Ubuntu forums about this since it affects Ubuntu for you too. It could be a graphics driver incompatibility. If you are running Mint 11 now, you can try the command inxi to show some basic hardware info for your system, Or...

Re: how to install grub in a partition and not mbr ?

dhdurgee recently had this question; http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=104502 Ultimately this works (PBR install); https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2#Install_to_Partition_or_Partitionless_Disk From said wiki: The reason why grub-setup does not by default allow this is because ...

Re: Creating bootable USB stick won't boot

If it has a floppy, you can kick-start the USB from a floppy using the "Plop boot manager" or "plopKexec" http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html So the DVD drive doesn't work at all, or is it a CD drive and thus can't read DVDs? If it reads CDs you can launch the Plop stuff from a CD-R instead. Plo...

No problem, good luck!

My last post on this thread illustrates the issue too: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... it=+format

For Unetbootin, this is a nice easy tutorial also; http://www.pendrivelinux.com/using-unet ... rom-linux/

Re: Trouble Upgrading from Linux Mint 12

Startup Disk Creator doesn't work correctly, from what I've read. The current ISOs are ISO/IMG hybrids, which means you can just write the ISO file to the entire USB flash drive and then boot it. Be aware this will wipe the drive, and it won't appear as mass storage (after you use it to install, you...

Re: Trouble Upgrading from Linux Mint 12

How did you create your USB Live stick? If you used Unetbootin, edit the Menu and add this maybe after the first entry; label debug menu label debug Start Linux Mint kernel /casper/vmlinuz append file=/cdrom/preseed/mint.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz priority=low debug=y -- Alternately, ...

Re: Long pause before GRUB loads

I googled pretty hard, but was unable to figure out how to make GRUB tell me what it was doing. Do you guys know how I can do that? Yes, there is some GRUB debug output available, but it happens after you run a menu entry. In any case you probably first would want to put the menu in text mode; Edit...

Can't even boot the live system, or can't install after booting the live system? Can you boot a Live DVD of Ubuntu 12.04? Linux Mint 13 is based on it.

You have all of those DE on your system? I think I saw an answer to a similar problem that involved reinstalling the login manager package or whatever it is called; gdm or mdm or whichever it uses in your version...

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Re: Linux Mint 13: Grub2 ISO Loopback Not Working?

I was talking to caribriz, and he said he really can boot the ISO using GRUB and a USB flash drive, but only after he deleted all NTFS partitions from his hard drive!

I will have to try this on an old PC. Or rather, probably temporarily change the partition type to see what happens...

Re: Can I install and run linux mint ON a USB drive?

@usbtux It is nice to see you have made some tutorials for new users. What is the rationale for not using a swap partition? Does not having one affect performance?
