Re: Cannot boot from USB, Mint just boots anyway

The process would be exactly like they do at Arch Linux; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Installation_Media It may be a bad flash drive, but here's the thing. When you "burn" or more precisely write the new hybrid ISO/IMG Linux Mint 13 ISOs to a USB flash drive, the drive will no longer be ...

Re: Mint 13 MATE 32-bit installation just stops

You know. I was happy at 7, with manual Firefox upgrades. I might switch to 9 now that I'm out of date. I might try Slackware, who knows?

If it works with your hardware, and package updates are still available, why upgrade? I'm not convinced newer is better, especially with Linux these days...

Re: Can I install and run linux mint ON a USB drive?

In case you get the boot loader (GRUB) in the wrong place, you might want to back up the MBR (if BIOS PC) to an external drive, but even if you don't and you overwrite the MBR, it isn't the end of the world, just inconvenient. I used to do it all the time, install to a USB flash drive, but I did use...

These will erase all data on USB stick.

Have you ever been able to boot a bootable USB flash memory device on this PC or is this the first time?

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

Also, it is better to use "sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc" to install grub because this makes sure dpkg installs any grub software updates to the right place. This does everything in one go so I would try this. You select from the list of possible grub install locations using the space bar. I have b...

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

As far as placing GRUB in PBR, see here; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2 The reason why grub-setup does not by default allow this is because in case of partition or a partitionless disk is that grub2-bios relies on embedded blocklists in the partition bootsector to locate the /boot/grub/i...

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

As far as the logs, I actually downloaded and looked at the first set, but not that last set yet. Did anything change that you could see? Yes, I guess go ahead and boot to the root shell, using the recovery. You could try this line in your GRUB menu before the linux line (the modified ones I gave yo...

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

Yes, you are probably right, the issue might be with your X server configuration. You can try booting with; linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=1d675a25-8060-4619-ba7f-7639d2ab3173 xforcevesa nomodeset Or even, linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=1d675a25-8060-4619-ba7f-7639d...

Re: Linux Mint 13: Grub2 ISO Loopback Not Working?

Yes, I wonder if it affects Ubuntu, but I haven't tried it against Ubuntu yet.

I reported it as bug #1013984 in launchpad to the best of my ability at this stage.

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

I looked at the logs, but I don't know much about this stuff, except I have some experience with GRUB. That is strange the 1.97 GRUB2 works when the 1.99 version didn't. Anyway, the drm is a graphics driver, so maybe there is a hangup with your NVIDIA and the drm module. Could this be related? http:...

Re: Linux Mint 13: Grub2 ISO Loopback Not Working?

OK, I have found a way to help the 32bit ISOs finish booting via GRUB loopback. After you get to the usual failure, Could not find the ISO /linuxmint-13-mate-dvd-32bit.iso At the busybox shell the ls command (list command) shows the directories /cdrom and /isodevice exist but mount shows /cdrom nor ...

Re: Maya cinnamon x64 install - unable to place grub in root

You probably should open a bug report. If during the boot loader choice location, your root is not listed, the only other option might be to run the LiveDVD or USB and install GRUB manually. I usually chroot to be on the safe side This works https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#ChRoot ...

Quickly create bootable Linux Mint USB Flash with RMPrepUSB

This is for creating a bootable USB flash memory drive that will run the Linux Mint Live System and Installer. This will work on Linux Mint 13 or higher or any Isolinux/Linux hybrid ISO. This will destroy any data on the drive, and it will temporarily not be usable as a mass storage device...

Nice usbtux. ;)

Again, for Unetbootin to work, your USB flash drive FIRST needs to be formatted to FAT32, so if you already used the dd method, format in Windows.

Re: How to install Mint from USB

First, did you select booting from the drive in your BIOS, or through a hot key for a boot menu on power up? Just making sure you know you have to tell your PC to boot from the flash drive instead of your hard drive. Also, did you checksum the iso? If you already know how to boot from your flash dri...
