Re: Need to re-install my Mint, a question or two, OK?

Thank you all for the many replies. I am going to crawl off into a corner and study them further. About the Fat32 partition need. I have Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible in HTML format. I like to be able to open the index page in file manager and then access any other pages (books and chapter...

Finally, reinstall worked but with a couple of issues

OK, Folks, I did reinstall. It worked and it didn't. They have changed the way you format the disk and set up partitions and That is missed up. Originally I had Partition 1 and an Extended partition with 5 divisions. I could not fathom how to do this in the new style Install. I ended up trying only ...

Re: Need to re-install my Mint, a question or two, OK?

You might be giving up on your current installation too quickly. Can you briefly summarize what you did and what happened as a result? Unless you did something along the lines of sudo rm -rf * while you were in the /home directory it might be possible to recover from your mistake. Been spending som...

Re: Need to re-install my Mint, a question or two, OK?

Thank you for all the encouragement. I believe I will reinstall. You see I have totally messed up my Home folder. I was tired and trying to create a folder and somehow ended up making a folder that is now replacing my Home. I could try to fix the mess but, this is not the first time I might lose a f...

Need to re-install my Mint, a question or two, OK?

The version I have been running since July 2014 is Mint 17 Qiana. Searching for that I have only Mate or Cinnamon but no Qiana. Can anyone tell me which of those would come closest to the Desktop and features I am used to using? Since last reloading my Husband has passed away and the little forum wh...

Mint 17 now having Oxygen issues

Hello, We updated our computers yesterday and I choose the Crux theme for my PC. Worked great. Today, I got an upgrade and now the theme is not working as expected and the Control Center says Oxygen-gtk is not installed. It was yesterday, because it was working. Did the update I got this morning do ...

boot menu very cluttered and confusing, how to edit

I have 3 distro's and Win XP on my hard drive. The Distros are, Mint 11, Zorin 5 and Ubuntu 11. There is a multiboot menu but with the exception of Mint and Windows the names are practically the same. I remember being able to edit the menu.lst but from what I have read in searches, that feature is g...

Re: recommendations for a File Manager

Thank you, all!

That is a long list of programs to try out. It should keep me busy for a while. That is just what I need, be back once I have gone through them.

Re: recommendations for a File Manager

Thanks for your reply Richey, Sorry to say that is not what I want. What I want is a file manager that reads/displays like gparted, and allows access to the files. I hate to say this but Windows DIsk Manager does this in it's own handicapped way. I just went into Disk Utility and relabeled my partit...

recommendations for a File Manager

Hope some of you will be able to recommend a file manager. I want to be able to see all the drives with their names dev/sda, dev/sda2, dev/sda3, dev/sda4, dev/sda5 and so forth. I am able to access the folders but without being able to see the actual partition designation I can not be certain of whi...

Re: gparted sees the partitions and Installer doesn't- why?

Another piece of the puzzle: When trying to install from the Zorin 5 DVD: "No Root File System is defined, please correct this from the partitioning menu." We went to gparted and formatted the partition to be used for the distro root '/' and the Home partition. Still not recognised Is that message s...

Re: gparted sees the partitions and Installer doesn't- why?

We are poking around some more. Using A Zorin5 DVD to boot up, my husband went to Administration\Disk Utility and viewed the drive. All partitions display 'Daemon is being inhibited' when he tries to mount the volume. Looking at the drive from 'Computer' (on the desktop) it shows all partitions but ...

Re: gparted sees the partitions and Installer doesn't- why?

. . . anyway, when you are in the installer, did you select 'Something Else' which should lead you to using manual partition scheme that you already have. if you exit installer, use gparted or fdisk, can you still get back the old partition table as reported by fdisk earlier? I watched the Ubuntu i...

SOLVED - gparted sees partitions and Installer doesn't

My husband has been running Mint 11 for about a month and is so pleased with the OS that he is taken with Linux as a whole. He decided to set up his hard drive to test several Distro's and WinXP on a multi boot. He spent a long time the other night repartitioning his HD for this purpose. Installed W...

Re: How can I access partitions from a live Mint 11 DVD?

At last I know what happened to my hard drive. As I watched my Husband partitioning a new hard drive I saw how I messed up using gparted. I had aligned the partitions I created to 'MiB,' not 'Cylinder.' Certainly won't make that mistake again.

Thank you all for your input.

Kind regards, white stone

Re: How can I access partitions from a live Mint 11 DVD?

Hello Wayne, We were fortunate to pick up a couple of hard drives last night. I will follow your advice, back up the data. Install the new hard drive. Make a diagram of the partitions. Make a Ghost of the newly installed, completely updated Windows for future reloads. Then install Mint and see if I ...
