WMV The stream is encrypted....[Solved] [Sort of]

This seems to be one of those things that has popped up in forums on and off for years, but I don't see it referenced lately. Downloaded a video, of the WMV variety. When launched in VLC media player it offers up: An error occurred The stream is encrypted and decryption is not supported. Subsequentl...

Brother MFC8860DN "not connected"

I've got a nice Brother MFC8860DN, which worked flawlessly for a year or two on my old PC, with Mint 17.2. I recall that getting the Brother drivers to install was a pain, but at least Brother actually HAS drivers for Linux. Upgraded this week to a new AMD quad core on an ASUS AM1M-A motherboard. Fr...

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

Followup: ASUS did indeed determine that the motherboard was faulty, and replaced it with a new one. Which didn't solve the problem, so I guess that their support people guessed wrong. After another hour or so of chasing possible solutions all over the Internet I finally ran memtest86 (from the Mint...

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

Half hour on the phone with ASUS tech support - who were nice, knew what they were talking about, and didn't treat me like an idiot - and the MB is on it's way back for repair/ replacement.

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

More followup: It was suggested that I update the BIOS, which I did. It was on 1301, my CPU requires 1501. Check here: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/AM1MA/HelpDesk_CPU/ (Incidentally, very easy to do) (In my defence, I might have done that sooner, except the the product information part of the...

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

Followup: Ubuntu, SUSE, and Fedora also crash with the same fault.

If I owned a Windows disc I would try that. :)

Who knows - maybe bad MB?

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

Tried nomodeset with no success.

I'm downloading previous editions of Mint to see if they work.

At least the kernel panic seems consistent. :)

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

Thanks! Lots of good info there - never thought to check Release Notes.

In the past Mint always just installed without a hint of trouble on any machine.

Hit the space bar - never saw that before - which choice do I want from the list offered up?

Cinnamon.

Re: Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB

OK, it does start to boot from the USB. No grub screen, just starts to load. I get the initial Mint loading screen with the count down, then it goes to an empty gray screen with a cursor blinking at the top corner. Been there for five minutes with no change. Hit the reset button on the PC, Got the M...

[RESOLVED] Install 17.3 to Asus AM1M-A MB (Bad RAM)

I want to install Mint Linux 17.3 to a brand new Asus AM1M-A motherboard with an AMD 5350 CPU and 8 gigs of Kingston RAM. Eventually I'll install the OS to a Kingston SSD, but right now all that I want to do it get the Live USB or CD to launch and run. From trolling the Internet I'm gathering that I...

Re: Fast and Easy OpenPGP

Will check that out. I'm now using Firefox anyhow as Chrome was consuming more memory than I had RAM installed on my desktop, and because Chrome on my phone started having serious issues loading common pages after the upgrade to Lollipop.

Why oh why does Google always break stuff?

[SOLVED] Nemo got Ugly?

OK Mint gurus, has something broken in my Mint 17.1 64 install, or has Nemo updated to an entirely ugly new look? I just let Mint install whatever updates it wants, so it's possible that there was an update last week. All that I know is my Nemo window looks downright primitive. Pic below. nemo.png

Re: Fast and Easy OpenPGP

Actually, it's the other way around. There's a button that says "Export Secreet Key", while the File | Export menu offers no suggestion what you're exporting.

Suggestions to lower RAM usage

My somewhat older, slower system (dual core, 64 bit, 3 (?) gigs RAM) is hitting it's head far too often these days. It's obvious that the lion's share of the problem is Chrome, which gobbles up insane amounts of RAM, but I'm also looking at how much memory Cinnamon is using. After looking over this ...

Re: Fast and Easy OpenPGP

It's confusing that the path to export the private key is so different (and unspecified) for the public key.

Ah well. Onwards to the next steps in this whole process.

Re: Fast and Easy OpenPGP

Huzzah! Exactly what i was looking for! Thank you! (edit) Well, except that there appears to be no way to export the Public Key from within Seahorse. Seriously. Otherwise, very good! Fast and Easy OpenPGP

It's finally time to get serious about security, but I'm a bit daunted by the apparent hassle involved. (Yes, have read through http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=158379&p=921124 and https://help.riseup.net/en/security/message-security/openpgp/best-practices and https://ssd.eff.org/en/...
