I'm really not seeing the superior stability **ALLEVIATED**

I really like the idea of Linux, and I particularly like the idea and approach of Mint. Nevertheless, I find the performance somewhat short of what's claimed. At least every other day, and sometimes every day, I hit a web page that freezes Firefox to the point where I can't even get out of the brows...

Re: Firefox 3.0 adobe flash 10

I had a problem too with Elyssa, firefox 3 and adobe flash player, what i did was to uninstall flashplugin-nonfree and libflashsupport using synaptic then i downloaded tgz from the adobe page and installed that, works fine now I had to do that too after encountering some problems. No idea why that ...

Re: Never dealt with Linux distro upgrade before--be gentle!

Never mind, I just did a clean install of Elyssa, reinstalled all my software, and copied the contents of my old /home folder. Seems to work fine.

Never dealt with Linux distro upgrade before--be gentle!

Hi, I've been using Daryna for a few months now (in a dual boot with XP Pro), and I like it a lot. I'm thinking of upgrading to Elyssa, but I don't want to put myself in a situation where I mess up what I've got and have to spend hours, days, or weeks getting things back to where they should be. Fir...

Current status of Moonlight/Silverlight?

I'm a big NBA fan, so I like to visit nba.com occasionally. However, many of their videos appear to be in the Silverlight format, which Linux Mint (and probably most or all other Linux distros?) can't play. My understanding is that Moonlight is a Novell-backed initiative to make an open source versi...

Re: Display flicker in Daryna but not XP Pro?

OK, it looks as if I spoke too soon. I'm now seeing the "flick" again, though it doesn't seem to be quite as frequent. One thing I should have mentioned is that it seems to occur mainly when I'm actually doing something like making a window close or moving the mouse. Several times I've tri...

Re: Display flicker in Daryna but not XP Pro? [SEEMINGLY SOLVED]

Editing xorg seems to have done the trick, judging from early results. I now have a refresh rate of 60 Hz rather than 50, and for now at least, I'm not seeing the problem. If the problem arises again, I'll try Envy.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Display flicker in Daryna but not XP Pro?

Not sure what's happening but I have two possible solutions For some reason I don't know the refresh rate is low on nvidia cards and the solution is to add Option "DynamicTwinView" "False" in Section "Device" of /etc/X11/xorg.conf There is only one section called just ...

Re: Display flicker in Daryna but not XP Pro?

Tell me, does your monitor have a setting in the menu (menu on the OnScreenDisplay (OSD) of the monitor itself) to show the Hz of the signal coming in. Mine does, its under the setting "Display Timing", it gives me lots of options, but inconspicuously shows the one its running at currentl...

Display flicker in Daryna but not XP Pro?

I have this problem that puzzles me. Please bear with me, as I'm a newbie. I have an Asus Z84J (see signature), which I dual boot with Daryna and XP Pro. Video card is as shown. I have the restricted Nvidia drivers running, according to Mint, but I didn't do it through Envy (I'm not entirely sure wh...

Re: eMusic Download Mgr--run NSCD??

Actually, after a little searching, I've decided to avoid the NCSD issue altogether and using an application called eMusicJ in place of eMusic's download manager. I got the tip off Ubuntu's boards, but I've lost the link. Anyway, if anybody else is into eMusic, at first blush eMusicJ seems to be a m...

eMusic Download Mgr--run NSCD??

I've been using Mint for a few days now and love it so far. I've got most of what i need already, but still have a few things to figure out. One is my beloved eMusic, to which I've subscribed for a couple of years. They have something called the eMusic Download Manager, which I've found very conveni...

Re: Partitioning question about upcoming Mint/XP dual boot

Thanks again, folks. I am happy to say that I got the Mint install done, and I am now typing this from within Mint--where I plan to spend as much of my computer time as I can. I'll be using Mackie Tracktion in Windows as my music program for the foreseeable future, but for Web browsing and office st...

Re: Partitioning question about upcoming Mint/XP dual boot

As far as I know, Ubuntu Studio does use a different kernel: http://ubuntustudio.org/files/ubuntustudio_release_notes_en.txt Other audio-focused distributions may as well. I seem to recall hearing that 64Studio and JAD do, but I'm no expert. I'm confused on how you could have two different kernels f...

Re: Partitioning question about upcoming Mint/XP dual boot

Also to further the answer on audio tools, you can install all the UbuntuStudio apps in Mint, you do not need to install another OS to get them, they are readily available in the repos. So don't worry about setting aside space for another os just to get the UbuntuStudio apps. [Guinness commercial] ...

Re: Paritioning question about upcoming Mint/XP dual boot

Thanks to both of you for the prompt and helpful advice. FWIW, I'll be doing the bulk of my music recording to an external HDD (eSATA if I can, USB or FW if I can't). So I won't be too worried about leaving space on the primary drive for audio files (which can build up quickly, as you know). If I ma...

Partitioning question about upcoming Mint/XP dual boot

Hi, I'm a newbie, but I've been playing around with various distros on live CD and have decided that I want to dual-boot Mint on this new XP Pro laptop I got (Asus Z84J, 2 GB, T7200 2 GHz processor, 200 GB 7200 RPM, Intel 4965agn wireless, NVidia Go 7700). The main reason I'm keeping XP is that I'm ...
