Re: Too early to think about a name for Mint 11?

Definitely not to early . . but someone else came up with this idea -- already. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=52106&p=330861&hilit=name+for+mint+11#p330861 This thread already has 35 posts. Perhaps you can add your suggestions for a name to the other topic thread. (Th...

Re: NO SOUND FROM LAPTOP SPEAKERS

Thanks for your help. rlindsey0 may have come up with something important. When i right click on the sound icon in the tray and select preferences, "analog speakers" is not an option. There are 4 "analog output" options, but no "analog speakers" Should there be one? An...

Re: NO SOUND FROM LAPTOP SPEAKERS

I had something similar with Isadora. I didn't lose the speakers entirely, but they were very low. Here's what fixed it for me. Click the sound icon on the panel. Then click "Sound Preferences." Go to the "Output" tab. In the "Connector" box at the bottom, try selecting...

Re: So is it really helpful to have a separate data partitio

I use a separate data partition and mount it in /home. When a new Mint version comes out, I do a clean install, in which I mount but ibviously do not reformat the Data partition. But first I back up my /home, including my hidden config files. Then, when I reinstall my programs, I try copying the con...

Re: Where are the programs?

There should be a menu button on the left end of the panel at the bottom. Click that.

Re: Will microsoft Money 2007 work with mint 8?

You could also try Moneydance. It's not free as in free beer, but it works well on Linux. I transitioned from Money 2007 on XP to Moneydance on Mint myself. However, I wasn't trying to reload 12 years of financial records either. If you haven't completely gotten rid of Money and your Windows install...

Re: can't burn CDs, either on Linux or Windows

No, it was a CD image, but you raise another interesting point. My drive will read CDs and DVDs fine when the computer is up and running, but the computer won't boot from a bootable DVD (like, say, Mint KDE). I've tried to go into the BIOS to see if there's a setting there that causes this, but with...

Re: can't burn CDs, either on Linux or Windows

That sounds plausible. I've had this computer for two years now, and I never used to have these problems with any burning program, either on Linux or on XP, even though I frequently burned ISOs at max speed. Maybe the drive is just wearing down.

can't burn CDs, either on Linux or Windows

I find I can't burn CDs and DVDs with Brasero any more. At least not Linux .ISOs, which is what I am trying to do. The burning process goes along until near the end, when I get a message that includes the phrase "Internal SDK error: CStarBurn_ScsiTransportSPTI::ExecuteCDB(): Command failed"...

Re: Songbird not working on Linux Mint 8

Songbird 1.4.3 works fine on Mint 8 for me. I just downloaded the tar.gz, put it in my Home folder, extracted it there, and created a launcher on the desktop that went to "songbird" within the Songbird folder created when I extracted the tar.gz. I dragged and dropped the .png icon to the i...

Re: Aw, not the NVIDIA graphics flickering again ...

You cannot have Compiz and Gnome Compositing turned on at the same time, so be sure that GC is turned off . . ? Good thought, but GNOME compositing was, and is, definitely turned off. :? I think I may try this solution and see if it helps: http://www.ubuntusolutions.org/2009/02/screen-flickering-wi...

Aw, not the NVIDIA graphics flickering again ...

All through Mint 6 and 7, I had an issue with my display flickering intermittently whenever I enabled Compiz (see system specs in signature), so i'd routinely turn it off and enable GNOME compositing. This solved the flickering problem. When I installed Helena last weekend, the first thing I noticed...

Re: cannot start up after upgrade

This is a long shot, because you obviously know more about Linux than I do ... but did you by any chance happen to be trying the upgrade with the proprietary drivers up and running? (I thought you might because of the mention of EnvyNG.) I thought I remembered seeing somewhere (maybe in the notes fo...

Re: Linux Mint 8 "Helena" released!

Just installed Helena today, and so far no problems. Wireless was recognized right away with no difficulties, and oddly, Compiz seems to be working better for me than it did before. I used to have a little flickering problem when Compiz was enabled, but not any more. The only little glitch was that ...
