Re: How to change primary display with no acces to it..

Can you borrow another computer and use ssh to access your screenless laptop? The primary display will then be on the borrowed machine and you may be able to make the second display the primary.

Re: Newieb HTPC question

I've been fiddling around with streaming tv programmes and films I've stored on a networked hard drive. It's a bit complicated as the programme files are stored in an unusual format. I discovered that you can do it direct from LinuxMint if you install VLC (from the software manager) and play the fil...

Re: Mutltiple users - What should I see in /home?

Thanks all As usually happens I can't find the answer I need, so I post a query. Then try searching using a different approach and get where I need. What I found is what you all said. I can hide the admin folder, but then I won't be able to see it when logged in as admin. I can reference the admin f...

Solved - Mutltiple users - What should I see in /home?

I'm setting up some recycled PC's for a local pre-school with LM17 Mate. I've been asked to provide an Admin account for the Head Teacher, and a restricted account for the staff to do their daily recording. Head is to have access to staff files, but staff do not have access to Heads files. I've got ...

Re: Google maps

I've found that map detail was improved by changing to the Classic version. I recall that there was a click on tab at the bottom of the screen. I can't see that tab to confirm now of course.

Re: Help with installing Updates

Must learn to type faster, Karlchen has said all I had typed before I could submit. One additional tip. If you still have the terminal open, then pressing the up arrow key will take you back to the previous command you typed. Use the left hand arrow to navigate to the start of the line and type sudo...

Re: Precise repository failure on Mint 13 Maya

Well that's a surprise, after another reboot updating is working without error, and I have the green tick back. Must have been the drivers for my brother-in-laws Canon printer that I was trying to access wirelessly last week, just for the fun of finding out how to do it. Hopefully Phoenix1963 will f...

Re: Precise repository failure on Mint 13 Maya

I've been stumbling around in the dark here, and removed i386 packages for the Canon printer I played with recently, and the one that I've had installed for some time. No change in the error messages. I thought I was onto something when I went looking at the repository and saw the Packages file ther...

Re: Precise repository failure on Mint 13 Maya

Cant help with a solution, but I can confirm that you are not alone. I'm running LM13 Cinnamon 64bit on my laptop, and get the red cross in the update manager icon. When I update I get this error message Err http://archive.ubuntu.com precise/universe i386 Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.24 80]...

Re: Bootloader insatll failed, no big deal, right?

Welcome to the club WolfenHammer. I did exactly the same last week on an install for a friend. On a dual boot with XP put the boot loader somewhere that boot couldn't see it, and like you was too quick to press the CD eject button so it closed again straight away and stayed closed. I had to shut dow...

Re: How do I prepare an XP box for dual boot LM17?

Thanks guys, That went better than I expected. Copied off files to be retained, Deleted all the temp files and similar logs. Emptied trash. Defragged. Resized Windows C drive with gparted, restarted and let Windows do its checks. Added a D drive in windows and put the My Documents folder in there. I...

SOLVED - How do I prep an XP box for dual boot LM17?

I've volunteered to put LM17 on a friends desktop. Currently XP 32bit. I had a look with the inbuilt defragger and it's happy that few files are fragmented, but they are spread all over the disk. There is plenty of storage space left, the disk is only about a third full. I propose to copy off all th...

Re: Cant connect to Skype in Mint

At last. A question I can answer, or at least point somone in the right direction.
Skype 4.2 doesn't work with Mint 17. If you look at the Skype entry in Software Manager you'll see rossw1947 has posted the answer. Delete 4.2 and install 4.3 from Skype's website. Worked for me!!

Re: annoying beep at startup

Is it the startup jingle you're talking about? I hate it too. In LM13 cinammon you can Left click on the sound volume icon on the bottom screen bar, click on Sound Settings, click on Sound effects and disable it on the first line. Try disabling stuff in there till you find the one you don't like, or...

Re: Lenovo laptop that runs Mint 16?

I can understand the desire to pick a laptop from the specs, and install LM16 because it's the newest. Might it be worth approaching the problem from the other end. Find a Lenovo laptop at a price that's OK, then check for compatibility. That way you'll not end up looking for machines that may not b...

Re: MD5Sum on Downloads/DVD burni

I'm having problems with that brain cell too. I'm sure I've read that the MD5 sum can only be applied to the download as when you burn to DVD there is a bit of data added by the burning process to make the DVD work. This changes the MD5sum of the burnt iso in ways that are specific to the type/size ...

Have you tried formatting using Gparted ? You may need to download Gparted first. It's on the live disc but often not on the installed system
