Re: migration from XP 32 bit to Linux 64 bit

I had trouble with using a TV instead of a monitor. It wouldn't respond to changes in screen pixel size. It turned out that there was a setting in the TV options to tell it it there was a computer attached so it stopped scaling the signal. Perhaps you have a similar setting on your TV

Re: How does Linux Mint listen to it's users?

Here's a good example. Starts with a point of view, descends into a bit of a witch hunt, gets a reasoned response from Clem and ends with a determination to modify the way that things are done. It impressed me greatly to watch the development of the argument from the sidelines http://forums.linuxmin...

Re: Problem connecting school wireless network under Linux M

If you can ping an internet address such as Google (ie 8.8.8.8) and get a response like this you are connected bob@bob-Lenovo ~ $ ping -c3 8.8.8.8 PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1 ttl=47 time=31.6 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=2 ttl=47 time=31.9 ms ...

Re: Problem connecting school wireless network under Linux M

You've shown a screenshot that reports wireless as being connected. Maybe it is. Could your problem be that you have a difference in DNS server setup. I've been there. If you can ping 8.8.8.8 from a terminal (ping -c3 8.8.8.8) then that would indicate you need to look at DNS.

Re: How to check my current version of Linux Mint?

When I'm not sure whether I'm in the 32 bit or 64 bit installsof LM13 I have on the desktop I look at the Welcome Screen in Menu-Preferences.

Re: Is Mint for someone that has NEVER used a computer?

It would be no more and no less suitable than any other OS for anyone with no preconceptions about what a computer should or shouldn't do. I'd say give it a go, load it with Mint 13 (not cinammon with that much RAM) and you'll not be troubled too much. You'll be her go-to for support, so choose some...

Re: Cant even Start with Linux

Jaybee, I've been waiting for your return to the fray. It's a shame but entirely understandable that you don't want to give more time to pursuing what might prove a fruitless path. Much kudos for your persistence and effort. Hope to see you on the forums again soon.

Re: Cant even Start with Linux

Looking at some old threads about install errors and problems with sr0, your cd drive, I found an old one that was solved when it was discovered that the jumpers on the IDE cable serving both CD drive and Hard drive were both set to cable select. Replacing jumpers as master and slave sorted the prob...

Re: Cant even Start with Linux

I've been following this thread, not because I have a similar problem, but because I find it very interesting to witness the patience and care taken by those who can help and willingly do. However I have wondered why no-one so far has commented on your use of NTFS as a file format every time you've ...

Re: how do I turn off migration?

Thanks cw The procedure you outline is exactly what I did first time round, except I used same username and password for both installations. It worked OK. Mint protected me from myself. From your post I take away the advice that 1 I can't get from where I am to where I'd like to be without re-instal...

Re: how do I turn off migration?

Thanks cw, I had suspected as much. Perhaps I should have asked 'How do 32bit and 64bit systems have separate desktops when the migrate option is not selected a installation' and is it possible to replicate that separation without re-installing? It takes at least one post to find out how to phrase a...

how do I turn off migration? SOLVED

I have LM13 Mate in both 32bit and 64 bit versions on my PC. I put the 32 bit version on when I was having problems rooting and upgrading my phone, and it worked well) Recently I had to reinstall the 32 bit and accepted the offer to migrate settings from the 64bit version. That worked well too, but ...

Re: I lost everything 25 years of photos and stories ect.

I can't help much with your problem, but I can tell you that the -l (that's a lower case L) is an option on the fdisk command, the option on it's own is not understood. On my machine I get no response with fdisk -l. I need to sudo first. The command then becomes sudo fdisk -l You'll alresdy know tha...

Re: How to fix Broken packages Mint13 Cinammon, libcroco3

Download Manager insists that I need libcroco, but installation fails as above. I was hoping that whatever has gone wrong would be corrected at source, but no signs of that, so I thought I'd try remove the librcroco files, to see if I could then re-install. I chickened out because Synaptic says that...

How to fix Broken packages Mint13 Cinammon, libcroco3

On my Mint 13 Cinammon 64 bit pc I have had broken packages showing for libcroco3 and libcroco3-i386 for the last few days. I've tried unsuccesfully to reinstall a couple of times but get this error message E: libcroco3: libcroco3:amd64 0.6.5-1ubuntu0.1 cannot be configured because libcroco3 E: ia32...

Re: Installing Nautlius on Mint for RabbitVCS

I don't know what Rabbitvcs is, but I was interested enough to look in Synaptic as it seemed to me that your search wasn't giving you enough results. In Synaptic if I search for nautilus (which happens to be already installed on my Mint 13 Cinnamon) I get ove 100 responses, including rabbitvcs-exten...

Data from my solar panel monitor in graphical form

I have solar panels fitted to the roof, and a GEO Solo pv monitor collecting data from the generation meter and storing it on an SD card. The GEO makes a new folder each day called GEOymmdd.DAT that contains a figure for total generated power updated every 15 minutes. It is possible to uplad the dat...

Re: Problems with powering off

I had the same problem, not every time, but when it happens it's a pain. sometimes it would restart 2 or 3 times before I killed the mains.I thought it might have something to do with the fact that I'm powered through a UPS. I was living with it, and turning off at the mains when the restart happene...
