Why then the simple way, explained here, Installing Wine in Mint 19 , works for me on 64-bit? Only today, I set up a new Mate system and installed Wine 3.0 from the official Ubuntu s...

Re: Installing Wine in Mint 19

Addendum: Only today, I set up a new Mate system and installed Wine 3.0 from the official Ubuntu software repositories on it. The only package which I actively selected in Synaptic Package Manager for installation was: wine-stable (3.0-1ubuntu1) wine-stable (3.0-1ubuntu1) pulled in a sheer endless ...

Re: Remove all python and kill linux

Hello, frkhrd. Provided you only used Synaptic or apt-get, i.e. the software management tools, to uninstall Python, in this case you can identfy the name of each software package, which has been removed, from the files + /var/log/term.log + /var/log/history.log + /var/log/dpkg.log You should compile...

Re: Problems removing $WINDOWS.~BT

Could it be that actually $WINDOWS.~BT is named $windows.~bt ? (Pay attention to the different capitalization. Linux is case sensitive.) - Hm. A Windows Explorer screenshot, which I came across, suggests it is really spelt $WINDOWS.~BT , i.e. all uppercase letters. Would it not be smarter following ...

Re: Problems removing $WINDOWS.~BT

Hello, vansloneker. For such cases, where the screen output is so long that it exceeds the default terminal screen buffer, you can temporarily resize this terminal buffer from the default value (1000 lines or maybe 2000 lines) to 10,000 lines e.g. or even 20,000 lines). Having only the end of a very...

Re: Problems removing $WINDOWS.~BT

Hello, vansloneker. The Windows directory name $WINDOWS.~BT is tricky under Linux. Reason: Linux will intepret the substring $WINDOWS as the content of the (not existing) environment variable WINDOWS. $WINDOWS expands to an empty string. As a result, without escaping the $ character from the ...

Re: Synaptic not opening [SOLVED again}

Hello, chazb. You have marked your thread as [solved]. Does this mean that Synaptic and Software Manager start up again as they should? By the way, whether there are pending updates or not, this will not prevent Software Manager and Synaptic from starting up correctly. And your "inxi -r" and "sudo a...

Hello, chazb.

Please, open a terminal window. Execute the command

I assume that Synaptic does not start up. Please, post all messages, which are displayed in the terminal window. They might give a hint why Synaptic cannot start.

The real instruction on how upgrade in-place from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19, however, is here: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19.
The same URL can be found in the blog post as well, but it is easily missed, because it is not really highlighted. :(

Hi, wolseley.

Could it be that you were hit by the current issue that the ftp.heanet.ie server is unreachable? - The links on the verfication page all point to ftp.heanet.ie.
Please, check whether xenopeek's advice helps you work around this issue.

Re: Waiting for Firefox Update

Seems the Ubuntu Mozilla Security team considers the Firefox version 63.0.1 worthwhile. Received it today from their PPA. Might suggest Firefox 63.0.1 is on its way. But beware: being in the Ubuntu Mozilla Security team's PPA is not the same as being in the official Ubuntu repositories or in the off...

Re: Waiting for Firefox Update

Actually, the Mozilla Firefox 63.0.1 release notes only list 3 fixed bugs, none of which I have encountered so far on Mint.
So my personal impression is that we do not miss anything, because we are stuck on Firefox 63.0.
