Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

Although the unicode sequence for the degree symbol is 00b0, the shortened 0b0 produces the same result which can be handy if it has to be used often. Indeed. Useful knowledge. And on my standard 105-key Scandinavian keyboard, I can produce «°» by depressing my Compose Key, and then taking «o», twi...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

I've now completed a fresh installation of (the Swedish-language edition of) 64-bit LM 19 from a flash drive to an ACER X1935 box, on which I earlier had installed LM 18.3 and from which I'm presently posting this report. Everything went hunky-dory ; I've installed a single account with IBus as my I...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

Firstly, the Unicode hexadecimal code for the degree symbol ° is «00b0», effectuated by typing «Ctrl + Shift + u» and then entering the code and taking Return.... But let me return to my own experience : yesterday I downloaded the 32-bit ISO file for LM 19 to my main (64-bit LM 18.3) box, used UNetb...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

I am using Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, updated from Beta per the instructions in yesterday's announcement. Ibus is not installed. Neither shift-ctrl u nor the compose key works for me: * shift-ctrl <release> u2015 inserts "u2015" * shift-ctrl-u <release> 2015 inserts "2015" * compose key <release> --- ...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

Here is my detailed account, Henri: I installed ibus-m17n including its entourage of ibus, etc. via Synaptic. Checked the functioning of Unicode as well as Compose Key sequences which all worked. Rebooted. Checked the functioning of Unicode and Compose Key sequences which again all worked. Removed ...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

Prepare yourself, kyphi , for a detailed account of my throrn-strewed path. The first thing I did was to check integrity and authenticity of my ISO file, with the following result : mhenriday@mhenriday-GA-990FXA-UD3 ~/ISO $ sha256sum -b *.iso dd2a619f84a55084a3fcc743ceecce3c004ef22919662b09fbc08657c...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

I have just used a fresh live medium with Linux Mint 19 to test Unicode functioning and it all works fine. I don't doubt that in the least - which is both encouraging and discouraging - encouraging because I thus know that the problem is not with LM 19 beta per se , discouraging because I can't exp...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

The unicode sequences for Š and š are Shift+Ctrl followed by u0160 and u0161 respectively. Quite aware of these facts, kyphi , but it's much easier for me to use the Compose key and the sequence I outlined above. Alas, neither of these alternatives work, which to my mind indicates that there is a p...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

As noted above, «Ctrl + Shift + u», and then typing in the relevant hexadecimal code didn't work for me, (whether or not I depressed the space bar) ; the thing was that after entering «Ctrl + Shift + u», « u », contrary to my expectations, was not displayed and entering the hexadecimal code simple ...

Re: Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Solved

Holding down Ctrl+Shift followed by typing u1f609 produces 😉 when Ctrl+Shift are released. No need to press Space. Ctrl+Shift plus u😉 cannot be accomplished as far as I can see since & and # require the shift key which is in use. https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html Thanks f...

Re: Cinnamon crash - Solved

I know this is marked as "solved", but there still seems to be some indecision about whether or not to try Nvidia drivers, so, FWIW: 1. if you reinstall the Nvidia driver and it breaks your system, if all else fails, you should be able to restore it with a TimeShift snapshot. Thanks for your kind r...

Inserting Unicode glyphs on Mint 19 beta Not Solved

After installing Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon beta on a reserve box (I await the standardversion before upgrading from 18.3 on my main box), I've only encountered one bug ; viz , I can no longer insert Unicode characters into a text using «Ctrl + Shift + u», typing in the relevant hexadecimal code, and th...

Re: Cinnamon crash - Solved

IIt would appear there is a problem with the driver, its possible it was updated. Try switching to another version, say 340 and see if the problem persists. See if you can starat terminal with alt + F2 and type in x-terminal-emulator. Then type sudo driver-manager into the terminal. The Nvidia driv...

Cinnamon crash - Solved

After starting my main box, on which I run 64-bit LM 18.3, this morning, I was greeted by what looked like 640 x 480 resolution on my 27" 4K monitor. When I logged in, the following notice was displayed : Cinnamon crashed. You are running in reserve mode. Do you want to restart Cinnamon ? [My transl...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs SOLVED - but I don't know how !

I think at this point, cosmo , that I shall lay my weapons down ; no one can reasonably claim that we have not fought the good fight, and in any event, I now know how to enter Unicode glyphs on this machine, so I'm not suffering.... But it would have been fun to learn what's going on and as noted ab...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs SOLVED - but I don't know how !

Your new finding does no longer look like a display problem; I now merely come to think, that is might possibly be a keyboard problem. Any chance to replace the keyboard on that machine? Thanks for your answer about TS language. I deemed it unlikely to be a keyboard problem, cosmo , as the process ...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs SOLVED - but I don't know how !

The computer, the unknown being ... Sometimes they seem to able to repair themselves. A matter for science fiction authors. It gets stranger and stranger - now when I try again in both the text editor (xed 1.6.3) and in Google Hangouts, the situation has returned to that I described in my first pos...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs

Cosmo , an update : I had occasion to write a degree symbol just now in a Google chat (Hangout), and when I did so, the « u00bo » was displayed on my screen ! I then tried it out in a text editor and in LO Writer, with the same results. I'm running the 4.13.0-36 kernel and the Nvidia 390.25 driver ...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs

But TimeShift does indeed sound interesting ; I'll be installing it from TeeJee's PPA.... :D No. TimeShft is available in the official repositories of Mint. In Mint 18.3 it is already installed, if this is a fresh install of 18.3. If this is an upgraded system, you have to install it on your own. (...

Re: Typing Unicode glyphs

The fact, that this problem does only occur on one of 2 more or less similar machines (to my understanding) is, what makes me wonder why. If I look at your list of excluded parameters, there is one, where I am still not quite convinced: Nor to choice of Linux kernel As you can see in the live syste...
