Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24

4.15.0-29 did not work for me. From all the threads about cinnamon crashing with 4.15 I think there is more than one bug. I am using 18.3 with Nvidia-340 driver. In xorg.log I got a three line message (that I lost) that the nvidia driver failed to load, see the system.log for further error messages....

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24

I have this bug but a bit different. I am on Cinnamon 18.3, using nvidia-340.104 driver with GEForce 210 Graphics card. After installing 4.15.0-24 cinnamon crashes on boot and goes to fallback mode. Some investigation I found LM 19 comes with 4.15.0-20, so I tried it. Same problem. Never tried 4.15....

Re: After long idle, resume screen awakes but only mouse will move

Oh how this problem has changed! I found I was using the Nouveau driver on my wifes machine. I had forgot to use the Nvidia driver 340.104 as she was using before and as I use on my identical machine. Installing the Nvidia driver causes Cinnamon to crash as it had on my earlier problem https://forum...

Re: After long idle, resume screen awakes but only mouse will move

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am inclined that failures would be more erratic and varied if the power supply. Also neither machine had the problem when upgrade to 18.3 and her machine fails with fresh install of 18.3. I am concerned mine might fail the same so don't wish to try it. I just ran mem...

Re: After long idle, resume screen awakes but only mouse will move

Delayed by other issues. Have confirmed Problem only occurs when screen turns off. Then moving mouse screen comes on and mouse cursor moves. But cannot click. Have to reboot. Looked at system log and see no errors. The strange thing is this problem did not occur with Cinnamon 18.0 updated to 18.1, t...

After long idle, resume screen awakes but only mouse will move

I am not sure which topic this post should be enter in, please forgive me. My wifes machine had 18.0 as fresh install and since updated to .1 .2 and 18.3 and it worked ok. Had all updates installed including latest kernal 4.13.0-43 generic. Had problem described in topic https://forums.linuxmint.com...

Re: SOLVED - Cinnamon crash on boot after hard shutdown

Reinstall of Cinnamon 18.3 worked and is still working. So apparently no permanent failure of SSD.

Re: Cinnamon crash on boot after hard shutdown

I have the old harddrive from pre SSD days on this machine with a 17.x version of LM Cinnamon, it boots fine with cinnamon. Must either be cinnamon data corrupted on SSD or SSD is bad. I fired up the Synaptic Package Manager and deleted all components of Cinnamon with mark for complete removal inclu...

SOLVED - Cinnamon crash on boot after hard shutdown

My wife's machine froze after plugging in phone to download pictures. After powering off holding down power button, reboot cinnamon crashes. Using a livecd thunbdrive cinnamon works fine. So I think the hardware is ok. Booting from SSD all else seems to work except cinnamon. I tried reinstalling cin...

Synapse and Activity Journal do not find .xlsx file types

due to a bug in LO Calc I need to save some of my files in Microsoft Excel .xlsx format. But with Synapse I cannot find these files. I can find other files in the same directory. In experimenting I find the Activity Journal also does not show this file type. Could this be a Zeitgeist problem? I can ...

system freeze web content app using huge swap

Not sure were to go with this. After updating my system with pulseaudio 1:8.0ubuntu3.9 from 3.8 I have had 3 system freezes. Nothing works but the mouse is herky jerky but buttons don't work. Ran Top and GKrellM. Failed a bit ago. Both these apps were froze. Kswap0 I think was the current task. I ha...

AMD & Spectre

I am frustrated by the information I have been able to find on this subject. I feel installing some of the fixes for this flaw are a greater risk than the flaw itself. I have a AMD FX-4100 on an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 MB. No where have I been able to find comprehensive information on resolving the issue. I...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

AMD has now said they have a vulnerability to the spectre problem. Stock down after the announcement. The terminal program that checks for vulnerabilities doesn't really check, but goes by what the manufacturer has said. So it looks like I will need the kernel update. But will the update need revise...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

I installed the Firefox 57.0.4 and the new webkit update for spectre and will check for new info occasionally. Not installing the kernel update. Thanks for the info. Ran the terminal check for vulnerabilities and think I am ok.

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

I am confused! I have an AMD FX-4100 So I do not have the Meltdown problem. With regards to Spectre I have Firefox 57.0.4 I do not have the Spectre problem with the browser. Going to the web site tencent it tells me I do not have browser exposure to Spectre. Now it gets a little confusing. Update ma...

You are correct. It was in the folder following the folder that disappeared. Makes perfect sense now.

Deleted my main documents folder! solved

Using Nemo I had the directory open, went to double click Documents folder to expand and my chair was bumped as I clicked. Documents disappeared! Not in the trash or anywhere. Fortunately I have a backup drive. This was on my SSD so I copied the backup Documents from the HDD to the SSD. But my quest...
