Re: dual Booting from external SSD into MBR EFI Bios

Hi there. I have looked at the user manual for your PC and I don't see any mention of UEFI.
The best thing is to boot Linux and open a command terminal and post the outputs here of these two commands. Then we can see what partitioning schemes are on your disks.

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
sudo parted -l

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

IMHO your computer should do what you tell it to -- and nothing more When I moved to Linux back at Ubuntu 9.04 I immediately felt I was in control of my computer again. The OS was designed around serving my needs and obeying my instructions. When I told an app to stop it did. Software was updated w...

I am really surprised. I thought Nutella knew what he was doing but this is a serious goof. Rather than W10 enjoying a reputation of being an improvement, at long last, over W7, it will have a reputation for being insecure spyware. Jerks. In this day and age the last think an OS maker needs is to be...

Holy...!!! This is a nightmare. You may want to ban your friends from connecting to your wifi if they are using W10. Geez

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

The other thing I just found is that my gaming PC can no longer open my Samba share from my Linux machine. It worked fine in Windows 7 but now it reports an error that it cannot explain! It finds the share and its subfolders but cannot open them. I found a similar problem on VBox when playing with t...

Re: questions on mint

Hi. Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint. :)

The /home directory holds the home directories of all users who have accounts on your PC. If your login name is, say, tom then your home directory will be /home/tom.

When you open a terminal it defaults to your home directory.

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

The novelty is wearing off for me. I just realized that there is a setting for allowing your PC to seed updates to someone else's PC in the background to effectively make your PC a MS download server. I don't like the idea of a company using my PC as a distribution hub. But what I really TAKE EXCEPT...

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

I just read the fine print on MS' website. It says W10 will have Windows DVD player for a limited period and then you'll have to pay for it. Why would anyone pay for it when you can download VLC and others for free. Or am I missing something?

Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

I really like the start menu. If Canonical had come up with this instead of Unity I might still be running Ubuntu. For me it has allowed me to remove a lot of shortcuts off my desktop and make them tiles in the start menu instead. The tiles can also be arranged in groups whose name you can define. I...

Re: Win7 to Win 10 Upgrade impact on my dual boot PC

I had a standard dual-boot on an SSD using MBR format and BIOS booting (not UEFI). Win7 + Mint 17.2. I upgraded Win7 to Win10 using a DVD and all went smoothly and Grub was still in the MBR afterwards. The menu entry for Win10 continues to be called "Windows 7" by Grub despite running "update-grub"....

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

I haven't had any driver problems so far. My W7 AMD GPU drivers continued to work but I upgraded to W10 drivers for good measure. All my apps continue to work. It was a seamless upgrade for me. Even my Logitech Quick Cam for Business 3000 works. On one of my dual boots it didn't even mess with grub ...

Re: government opposition to encryption (continued)

Well I say that Governments should not be allowed any more info than is absolutely necessary for normal business. More than that can potentially lead to serious erosions of democracy. It is nice to trust our Government but only as long as we prevent it from being able to be untrustworthy! WRT stoppi...

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

It is also rubbish that OneDrive does not encrypt your data unless you are a Micro$oft business client. How petty is that? Dropbox keeps your stuff encrypted by default as does iCloud (I believe). So don't put anything on OneDrive that you don't want to risk being hacked. Thinking about it, there is...
