Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..

The way it snaps windows into half screen or quarter screen and the way it restores the windows original size when you jiggle it is excellent.

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

Ok, I have finally got it working on my two PCs but not without a struggle. Gaming PC - Windows & Mint dual boot 1) The registration upgrade route did not work. I ended up being told to wait until notified the upgrade was ready. But this never happened. 2) I tried upgrading from the Windows10_x64 IS...

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

Well I still haven't got it. My games PC is still waiting for MS to allow it to download. I wonder what % of net traffic is this today? My office PC took some messing to get it to kick off a download in VirtualBox but it has now started. I had the W10 Update update fail with error 80240020 but found...

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

So I decided to actually find out what W10 can do. I find this a good demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctxZcZFCDmQ
I have to say I am very interested in trying it out.
I think MS may have some pretty good things here.

Example of base humour:
Surely it should be called Windows 1010?

I'm please to hear (pun) that W1010 will support flac audio format throughout. :)

Re: Will you upgrade to Win 10 upon release?

I could not possibly forego an offer of something "free" from Micro$oft. It feels like a gift from Heaven. Or perhaps the other place. However, I don't trust 'em! I run W7 as a virtual machine so that I can keep it contained and safe...inside its own creche if you like. I'll simply take a snapshot b...

Re: Fix borked Win partition

It isn't a problem to install W7 after Mint. You just have to reinstate the Grub in the MBR. That's simply done by booting live Mint and a couple of terminal commands. See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 ... D_terminal

Re: Partitioning with SSD + HDD - what would you suggest?

I'd keep it simple. Format the SSD MS-DOS/MBR. I would put ext4 root and swap partitions on the SSD. Don't bother with a boot partition...it serves no purpose and complicates things (unless you want to encrypt the root partition). I add the "relatime" and "discard" mount options in fstab. With 8GB R...

Re: Secure boot/UEIF enabled Install Win10

if you come across a PC whose secure boot (aka anti-competition mechanism) cannot be disabled then do not buy it. Also, slag the mfr off online. :!:

Somehow I dont think they would get away with this in the EU, or not for long.

You don't usually need a separate boot partition.

Re: Dual Boot question

Please confirm that you can boot either XP or Mint using the BIOS.

In Mint, open a terminal and post the outputs of:

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
and

Code: Select all

inxi -Fc0

Re: Dual Boot question

Hi. The Linux bootloader (Grub) will automatically scan all your disks and will add Windows to its boot menu. I recommend only having one drive connected at a time during installation to guarantee each OS install is confined to its own disk and this saves having to manually check where Grub installs...

Re: "nomodeset" what, why, effects?

@xenopeek: any idea why the kernel uses kms for graphics cards it does not work properly with...why doesn't it default to using bios drivers unless it detects a card that it knows kms works with? Graphics card problems that require the nomodeset fix have been around for years! I have never seen any ...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Cinnamon released!

I've found just one problem with 17.2. My Dropbox doesn't start up anymore...no icon in the panel. I can make it work by adding a delay (I chose 10 seconds) to Dropbox in the Startup Applications dialog and then logging out and logging back in. HOWEVER the Startup Applications setting is not persist...

Re: I need help about grub rescue mistake

I have had a look into booting Windows from the grub-rescue prompt and I cannot do it. 1) The documentation of the grub-rescue shell is virtually non-existent. The Ubuntu Community Grub 2 documentation is incomplete and erroneous. 2) The grub-rescue shell does not appear to have a help command so it...

Re: I need help about grub rescue mistake

Usually on a laptop you have to press one of the function keys or the delete key during power-up to force it to go into the BIOS screen. If you can get into either the BIOS system screen or the BIOS boot priority screen you should be able to select the DVD as the first boot device. There are at leas...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Cinnamon released!

Thanks!
I upgraded three PCs without any issues and it took just 10 minutes or so each time. Massive improvement over a fresh install. :D
No problems at all and it is noticeably nippier.
Good stuff.
