Re: Help: Simple Database OR Address book on steroids

Reading through quickly, did you actually try importing a spreadsheet into the LibreOffice Base Database? I had to do this sort of thing at a simple level years ago in MS Office, so no relevant experience of current LibreOffice capabilities or learning curve, but there's a wizard and it seems fairly...

Re: non-snap Chromium on Mint 20

There's been another thread on this for a while. The following PPA produced by Ji m for Ubuntu Handbook is installing and working nicely on my test LM20 Cinnamon install: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2020/06/install-chromium-via-deb-ubuntu-20-04/ However, the current Chrome browser running al...

Re: Disk space from win 10 for LInux mint 20 in dual boot

Hei I am quite new here for linux and want to move more space from windows 10 disk to linux mint 20. Anybody can help me ? Little experience Windows 10, but there are good resources here and elsewhere to get past "UEFI" and create a dual boot. Important to remember to fully shut down W10 ...

Re: Cherrytree as Snap?

Cherrytree is now available for LM20/ubuntu 20.04 as deb file and its based on GTKMM-3.0. Download the testing version 0.99.5 from the cherrytree site https://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/#downl. Works nice with LM20. ... That's great, thank you. Installed quickly and running right on M20 XFCE (regul...

Re: Cherrytree as Snap?

You may as well get used to snap/flakpak etc. Unless the Linux world in general does something about the lack of stable APIs, backwards compatability, and consistent paclaging systems (which I highkly doubt), you're going to see more and more of them. Either that or a LOT less software. Like a lot ...

Re: Cherrytree as Snap?

Thanks. The dev indicates a new DEB package is coming, and I'll bide time. https://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/#downl I've only replaced M18.3 with M20 XFCE on a casual use bedroom laptop, after printing a pw-protected PDF document with the most important Cherrytree information for it, Meanwhile hold...

Re: Live USB Persistent File not Saving Changes on v19.3

I've used 16GB thumb drives without problems for years, though as said above they don't last more than weeks or months without borking for one reason or another . It's an excellent way to pretest a Linux version for the particulars of different PCs and try various fixes and settings alternatives wit...

Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

I'm trying the Ubuntu Handbook on a persistent live USB (M20 Cinnamon) side by side with Chrome, and no performance difference. My one reservation is whether the PPa will supply version updates on schedule. [As of Sunday 13 July stable Chrome updated in Synaptic PM to v. 83...116-1 while the Chromiu...

Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

And then there is this... http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2020/06/install-chromium-via-deb-ubuntu-20-04/ ... The Ubuntu Handbook author Ji m is the guy who provided the unofficial PPA for Darktable 3.x last December when the fellow who had been doing it left off. That has become the only curren...

Re: Looking for the perfect free cloud storage...

I see you're skinning the cat in another, fairly sophisticated way, with your home as essentially a "cloud" server, and eliminating (or liimiting) third-party involvement. As to home security, Canada's CBC ran a cute piece some time ago on vulnerabilities of some of the more popular servic...

Re: Looking for the perfect free cloud storage...

I am backing up my system right now to a hard drive in my office. Why would anyone want to upload all their sensitive information to a server on the cloud that can get hacked? Heaven forbid you make some powerful guy angry and now he gets his friends with badges to intimidate the company hosting yo...

Re: Looking for the perfect free cloud storage...

I have limited but important online sync requirements for local storage as well as some simple cloud storage not wanted on devices, and use Mega for both. (After some months of testing I switched from Dropbox to Mega when DB suddenly limited its free service to "three devices", which made ...

Re: Can I search for types of files with Nemo? (videos only, or audio only, etc.)?

If it doesn't have to be Nemo, the Catfish system search utility is in the Mint Cinnamon repository. Working on Mint 20 live USB test install. For a selected drive, the Sidebar will limit files to video (or other types) and the search box would find "unity". The path is displayed with resu...

Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

Went to the release page and saw someone recommended slimjet chromium. Installed it, logged into my google account, synced and now I have all my history, bookmarks, etc. Plus it seems very light on resources. https://www.slimjet.com You might report back here after some experience with Slimjet. Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

... If only you people had bothered to read the release notes. Chromium is not present in the default repositories. To install it... No need to get chippy. I knew about this when the Beta came out, and it would be a bother. Chromium doesn't feed the Google Data Machine in the same way as Chrome, an...

Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

Bothering me as well, using Google Chrome for the time being (installs from .deb and adds PPA to Update Manager.) There are other reliable Chromium based browsers that work well and install easily from .deb. Opera was great but I'm leery of the China ownership now. The Vivaldi spin seems safe and to...

I also run XFCE on an old 2GB Dell laptop - video always in low resolution. If you haven't already, I'd suggest right-clicking the Panel, select add new items and scroll to add "System Load Monitor". Watch resource use in a small panel graphic while playing videos or any other demanding ac...

Re: Cherrytree as Snap???

Thanks for the quick response. In past (Mint 18/19.x) I tried Snap and Flatpaks as alternatives to installing via .deb or ppa, and got bloated installs two or three times normal size that were unnaturally sluggish to run. Installing Chromium froze and broke one Mint installation (can't recall if Sna...

Cherrytree as Snap?

Test installing M20 on live USB, and finding Cherrytree .deb fails to install. The website says it will not work on Ubuntu 20.04: debian/ubuntu package (NOT FOR UBUNTU 20.04/DEBIAN UNSTABLE, NEW GTKMM3 VERSION COMING SOON, USE SNAP or FLATPAK PACKAGE) cherrytree_0.39.4-0_all.deb (giuspen PPA: sudo a...
