Re: Serious OpenSSL bug renders websites wide open

Thanks. Today's update seemed more than just a coincidence, and I noticed it went from "3ubuntu1.1" to "3ubuntu1.2" - but the heartbleed site caused alarm.

Re: Serious OpenSSL bug renders websites wide open

Mint 16 XFCE: I noticed an openssl update this morning before reading about the big problem. Now I've checked and the April 8, 2014 update is version 1.0.1e which is not reported as being the safe iteration of 1.0.1, which is "g". http://heartbleed.com/ What versions of the OpenSSL are aff...

Re: Grub 2 boot loader simple question

I'd suggest running the hell out of Mint in a Perisistent Live USB installation BEFORE installing on the hard drive to save grief: you can thoroughly test for hardware and peripheral compatibility and unforeseen problems that way, and if it runs decently fast on thumb drive it will run real fast on ...

Re: Burn ISO to USB

Try the Pendrive Installer for building USB in Windows: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ I like Unetbootin to build USB from Linux but have read problems with it from Windows. I'd suggest experimenting with different distros on Persistent Live USB - I personally li...

Re: cannot boot Linux from USB stick

I've used Persistent Live USBs for some years, though have installed Mint on hard drives as well. Mint is really very good from a thumb drive. Reading your question, the thing that jumps out is that you aren't sure if the drive letter for your thumb drive is correct in the installer : you have to en...

Re: Wifi Authentication Repeated

I connect with internet via wi-fi from a Live USB thumb drive all the time, usually while travelling. I'm not clear from your description if you are trying to connect with a home local area network connecting to other computers (complicated), or just trying to access broadcast internet using the SSI...

Re: Desktop choices of lesser mortals (and machines)

I'd recommend experimenting on Persistent Live USB, both to check the aesthetics, relative performance of the OS, and how much of a nuisance it will be to replace preinstalled software you don't want with what you do want. In fact I'd encourage your friend to play with two or three alternatives on t...

Re: Sharing with Windows 7

I quite like Mint but gave up on Samba, etc. a long time ago. Local networking easily done between Windows units is a geeks breakfast of configuration gobbledygood for Ubuntu/Mint via Samba. My suggestion is if you want to sync the Windows PC shared files with directories your Mint PC's hard drive, ...

Re: weak wireless signal

Some ideas here - trial and error:

http://itsfoss.com/speed-up-slow-wifi-c ... on-ubuntu/

I've also found some wi-fi adapters (e.g. Atheros) have "power saving" as default setting, and disabling that will speed it up.

The problem is GRUB

I'm content with my dual boot W7 / Mint 16 but have looked into the possibility of eventually returning to Windows, without ever trying it. As those above suggest, it's not too hard to install an app within XP to get rid of the Linux partition. Unfortunately the dual boot also replaces the Windows b...

Here's the Ars piece:

There is a link to a fix but I'd be hoping currently supported Mint versions will be patched. Would be useful to hear from those who know.

Re: Mint LTS or Mint 16 for my Freinds and Family

My experience with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was not impressive. The OS was updated for a couple of years, but repositories for third-party software were out of date in a year or so, except for Chrome browser that was in the repos for quite a while. Maybe it was possible to "backport" or independen...

Re: Total switch from WinXP to LM13-Mate

I have to say, I got a lot of nonsense from Firefox yesterday - wouldn't render anything for a few hours and it was the same on two different machines. I switched off and rebooted my DSL modem and that fixed it. Try easy things first.

Re: Advice please ..want to delete WIN XP

You might want to give some details about your system, e.g. hard drive capacity and whether your operating system and data files are in the same hard drive partition, e.g. is everything on your C drive? Note that Mint may be larger than your XP, and in fact you might find you are short of hard drive...

Re: Saving configuration changes to usb memory stick

I ran Live USB for quite a while before finally deciding to install on hard drive - a great way to test out different versions of Mint, not to mention other distros, to see what works with your system and peripherals without headaches. Also to find out whether you'll miss anything from Apple or Wind...

Didn't follow the ins and outs of this thread, but was unable to install TrueCrypt on my 32 bit Mint 15 XFCE boots, until I discovered this guy who's fixed it: https://launchpad.net/~stefansundin/+archive/truecrypt The terminal commands to install are: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stefansundin/truecr...

Re: isn't the iso for the XFCE edition too big?

I don't get why anybody who consistently uses Mint would want to run it from a frozen CD instead of a Persistent Live USB that will save settings and allow for installing and deleting unwanted software, and be consistent between boots. An 8GB USB drive costs peanuts, runs Mint XFCE really well, and ...

Re: How do I add an item into the Whisker Menu?

You might want to reboot to give the menu a chance to "catch up".

If that doesn't show the new icon where it belongs you can try alacarte, which is a good menu customizer. I think it's in the repositories for most versions.

Re: Can normal people replace XP with Mint?

An interesting and pretty realistic discussion above. I've been getting more impressed recently with how much is being built with HTML5 onto Google's Chrome browser and Firefox (which is putting on OS on phones) then came across this link to put a build of Chromium OS onto a USB: http://chromeos.hex...
