I've wondered that myself. It happens often enough that you know not everyone is altering their sources themselves. It's got to be some goofy code.

Re: <solved> How to purge mate without killing my system?

I've never had that utility bork a system yet. It's amazing the cruft you can get rid of, even in a brand new installation.

Re: <solved> How to purge mate without killing my system?

Install a package called upgrade-system, then run it from a terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo upgrade-system
It'll ferret out any libraries and dependencies you might have missed. I use it on all new installs and upgrades.

What happened, zerozero? Did the kernel upgrade break X for you? I did it yesterday and came through unscathed. Running nouveau here, no proprietary video drivers.

Dear Squeezy, How can I motivate you, to do the same for Cinnamon? Please? Pretty please? Pwwwwwwwwwwweese??? If you need a guinea pig, I'd volunteer. I'll take a look at it but I can't promise anything. That last package mod I did was my first! I'm no programmer by any stretch of the imagination. ...

I hope that makes sense and I decided not to make a new thread but if you think I should, let me know and I'll do so! Thanks very much again. Sorry I can't help you with your networking problem. I have a pretty simple home network and I've always got it working easily. altair4 is the go-to samba gu...

Re: I get problems when I log on...don't know why!

Ok, well, you are telling me Thunar is better than Nautilus right? If this is true, and thunar is faster, I'm more than happy to purge nautilus. Tbh, I'm not to fussed which file manager I use! I'll give it a google but how do you suggest I remove nautilus? Edit: decided to destroy nautilus :) ! I ...

Re: I get problems when I log on...don't know why!

That's a pretty common issue on the Xfce upgrade to UP5. Nautilus has been installed (along with a lot of other GNOME stuff) and has taken over managing your desktop. If it were me, I'd just go ahead and purge Nautilus, but I think you can restore order by making sure Thunar is listed as the default...

Re: pulseaudio needs to go

Since my primary use for my computer is a small home studio, I use Ardour and Jack. Pulse gets in the way big time in a system like that. For the last LMDE/MATE build I did, I rewrote the mint-meta-debian-mate package to make mate-settings-daemon-pulse and mate-media-pulse optional with their gstrea...

Perhaps it would be better for the users to step up and do such a project on their own. Users helping users control their own systems is a treasured part of the Linux heritage. Enjoy This is your answer, right here. There is already a user-initiated LMDE KDE distro, why not a user-initiated LMDE St...

I think a Virtualization forum would be a good addition, but don't limit it to host or guest, include all virt questions/how-tos, etc. Subject lines should make it clear whether it's a host or guest question.

Re: mintUpdate icon says "up to date" - even if updates avai

Well-known issue, discussed many times. A quick forum search will yield more than you care to read.

Bottom line is that it's "working as intended", as IBM Lotus support used to say. Click on the icon, put in your password and have it check for updates.

Hey, at least it's not the terminal! :)

Re: Which virtualbox to use, esp for guest addons?

I'd use the one that doesn't say OEM. Haven't had any problems with the X-server crashing or anything. Just make sure your account on the host machine is in the vboxusers group, and your account in the guest OS is in the vboxsf group (for Linux guests) so you can access shared folders without requir...
