Re: soon gave up on mint18.2 xfce 64bit

I gather the atom was a 64bit chip but was sold as 64 and 32 bit with the later simply somehow 'reigned in' rather than physically different architecture ?

That said I think the best results with an Atom are with 32 bit ver 17.3 xfce

What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"? INERTIA Many businesses owners/managers believe: - it's too hard to change over to Linux - if it's free (Linux) it must be rubbish. (conversely Windows is expensive, so it must be good) - if they use Linux they won't be able...

Fair call. My windoze computer and FreeNAS server couldn't possibly be more physically intimate... they are in the same case !

Re: Vlad's Linux Diary, and G'day !

Well, having got a bit tired of that old atom laptop I have now installed the latest version of Mint on an i7 4770 desktop.
Very nice.

Re: Minimum system requirements

To the OP. The advice given herea; For a Core 2 Duo I advise the lightweight Xfce edition of Mint 18.2. Test the 64-bit version first, and if that won't boot, select the 32-bit version. is solid. I have an old spec Atom laptop thingy - and found 17.3with xfcce was the best for that situation. Most o...

Re: Some questions about Linux Mint

G'day - I'm new at all this too, and can't guarantee the accuracy of my answers BUT its the impression I have got from my recent experiences :) 1. I asked about a dual boot setup and the consensus was that it's not a good idea for beginners. YMMV of course. 2. Linux can do all of those things (or ra...

Some outstanding ideas there, some bending the laws of physics to breaking point - which I like. :)

penn your remote desktop idea is practical, so no fun at all
Plus the irony of using a remote desktop via a computer not 4 feet from the one I DO have on a desk.....

Stupid Questions... just for fun

I'll start. I had Mint installed on an old laptop but it was slow and annoying, So I installed it on an unused desktop machine I had (literally) lying around. It all works well but... I don't have a desk to put it on. Or space for a desk. Sitting on the floor with keyboard on my lap and using the mo...

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140

So..... I've just come across this. The technical side of it completely escapes me but the reason is good ! I have two computers which tend to run 24/7 or at least quite a lot. 1 is a Win 10 computer (GTX1070) , the other a FreeNAS system (i3 only, no graphics card or anything). I figure since they ...

Re: Install on a spare HDD ?

Thanks all, this will be a good reference thread for others in future. I came to my senses and thought "What the heck to I need a 2nd windows desktop for?" So that's now a purely Linux machine in all it's fresh minty goodness. Now to sort out some settings, get the software I like and then do a back...

Re: Install on a spare HDD ?

Well as I have my 'old' and 'new' windows desktops I've decided the old windows can go 'in toto' and I'll make that PC a linux-only proposition. No screwing around with dual booting etc. I haven't used that old system since I built my new one in any event. So I'm just double checking I have backed u...

Re: Install on a spare HDD ?

I want to instal Linux Mint on e: (which is a Western Digital 2Tb drive) How do I tell it during the install to leave those others alone, kill/format everything on the WD 2TB drive, and go from there? When I get to the partition table section on the install process it is apparent the WD 2TB drive is...

Re: Differences between gksudo/kdesudo, sudo, and su

Perhaps for the sake of clarity you could more precisely define what you mean by "graphical programs" please?

(Do you mean any programs that have a GUI, and if so why would you be running these from the command line anyway?)

Re: Install on a spare HDD ?

I guess the answer is dual boot, but having it on entirely different disks as opposed to different partitions of the same disk... so in theory less complex / less likely to have issues.

I envisage booting into windows on that computer very rarely.

Install on a spare HDD ?

I'll be installing 18.2 Cinnamon. The only installs I have done so far are to a computer with a single drive, so it was straightforward. I currently have a computer set up as follows: WIn 10 c: SSD system disk d: data disk (windows) e: blank HDD 2Tb I want to keep the windows stuff for now, (need to...

sorry caps lock :(

As to what it stands for well, even the Github repository and inxi wiki has nothing to say about that, as far as I could see.

I never see anyone talking about building Mint desktops!
I'm going to build a Mint desktop.

(with old hardware - prob about 5 years old or so I think)

Wish I hadn't sold the graphics card I used to have :(
Now I have to figure out what (cheap) PCI-E card I can get away with / need.
