Re: File with UFW ports settings?

sudo ufw allow 21

will allow FTP traffic through.

This is a quick suggestion for the VM but I have my doubts - use 'partimage' to make an image of the drive, then extract it into the new VM setup.

Re: installing 32 bit app on 64 bit system

First, I would try a re-install of libgfortan (remove/install). Thats just typical me. Then you can try to reconfigure the package with: dpkg --configure --pending If that doesnt work, why don't you try to explicitly tell dpkg where the .so file is: dpkg --path-include=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu Last...

Re: No password in user accounts

Removing the password required for logon does not erase your password from the system. It is still required to do other system related changes. So whatever your password was originally...that is still the password. Use that when trying to use 'sudo'.

Re: Permissions problem

The 'chmod' command is used to 'change mode' of a file. In the terminal, you can view the permissions of a directory by navigating to it, and typing 'ls -l' (those are L's). So do read the manual page on chmod ('man chmod') to get the rundown on changing permissions. You will need to be sudo. To cha...

Re: HELP PLEASE. SUN JAVA JRE FIREFOX PLUGIN.

I installed the JRE from the command line and everything worked well. sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk If you already installed your JRE, do you have the .so in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26/jre/lib/amd64? (obviously this is x64, it could be a separate folder for x86). If it IS there, then we c...

Re: Custom Panel Help Needed

Thanks, there is some good stuff in there. I still can't add quick launch icons to the bottom or top panel, but I will just start getting used to using the 'favorites' panel under the dash.

Re: Desktop Background Pixilated

That is pretty exciting! :D So when people talk about how much they love Linux, it is because it provides complete control over your computer's operating system, software, and access to hardware. The entry point for all of this information is the 'Terminal', which communicates directly with the comp...

Re: Disk Full - How Do I delete Files?

You will have to do it from the command line using 'sudo'. Just navigate to the file location and say

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf yourfile.ext
This won't require a password.

Re: Custom command

You can make your own commands by adding text files into the /bin directory and then making them executable. Here is an example: cd /bin sudo nano mynewcommand Type your command instructions, such as changing to directory and launching a program cd /usr/local/matlab/R2012/bin ./matlab Save and exit....

Re: Desktop Background Pixilated

Don't be sorry! This is why this place is here. That was silly of me, you can view the file system from the desktop by double clicking the 'Computer' icon. The windows disk should be directly accessible from there. For the video driver, open up a terminal and type 'lspci' Post that whole output back...

Re: software manager crashing & other issues

Hmm there might be an issue building with the software manager? http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=95712

As for the icon, install kmenuedit and then navigate to the program and select its new icon.

Re: software manager is crashing down

See if

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get check
would fix any issues. I'll be honest I am a little out of my league now  Does the synaptic package manager have what your looking for? I realize it's not ideal but you can use it while we work on fixing the software manager.

Re: KernelCheck or some other way for kernel compilation

Maybe be compiling your kernel they meant a build your own, with leaving out packages you don't see yourself using, along the lines of http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/. Well sorry to not direct answer your question, but I don't have an answer. I did just come across 'easyK' though, http://www.unixme...

Wow I didn't know you could update your kernel from underneath the OS. I just downloaded 3.2.7 from kernel.org, and will see about this myself :D maybe I'll check back later if I try to test out your Virtualbox issues.

Re: Black screen till desktop environment loads

Did you erase the Windows installation? If Mint is the only OS installed, there is no need for the grub menu to pop up. My boot is also 'quiet'. I am not 100% sure on this, but if you try step 2 from here http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/114 to disable quiet boot, that will probably prin...

Re: couldn't log out of Mint, graphics got messed up

The Windows problem is independent of the Linux problem; since they are on different partitions, they don't talk to each other. Error 43 is a failed driver, and might have just been a hiccup during boot.

For the login problem, can you try to log in as root or guest and see how far that gets you.

Re: Multifunction Printer Driver

Where did you get lost? Were you able to find and download a driver?

Also, check out

Menu > System Tools > System Settings > Hardware > Additional Drivers

But I will doubt this works, because Epson doesn't support Linux for this model.
