Re: Google competing against Songbird

Looks like ordinary Windows iTunes, plus an overlay of something that might have come from Chrome. I wonder if this is what you get if you configure iTunes to use Chrome as a default browser. Does it freak out? The top and left of that are definately iTunes. No question in my mind about that. The mi...

Re: Home Theatre / Media Center Comparisons

Which Blu-ray player with networking did you get? LG BD-390 It made my short list by virtue of -n wireless built-in. Then when I found a deal for one on Amazon for $258 that was the clincher. My feature wish-list didn't include the need to play games, as we're happy at home with a Wii. My brother w...

Re: Home Theatre / Media Center Comparisons

I'm disappointed too in how much of a struggle it has been to get a decent home theater system running based on any of the packages you listed. On the other hand, I'm thrilled at how utterly simplistic it was to hook my wife's brand new HP desktop running Win7 directly to the TV (DVI-out to HDMI con...

Re: Mint & Ubuntu - Your likes and dislikes

AK Dave, I agree with what you are saying, ppa repos are great for experienced users. The way I see it though is that packages like Firefox that are in the ppa repos should be made available as upgrades at least for Mint. We follow Ubuntu too closely, our tools are nice, usability is way better, wh...

Re: Which Desktop Version Do You Prefer? Vote Here

I prefer Gnome. I used to be a KDE guy. I really would like to be a KDE guy again. KDE abandoned guys like me long ago, and I'm still not comfortable with the 4.x series of KDE while the 3.5x older KDE now compares poorly (in my mind) with the newer Gnome. So I'm a Gnome guy. I tried to be an XFCE g...

Re: Mint & Ubuntu - Your likes and dislikes

My only dislike is with both Ubuntu and Mint. Say for example your hardware is not working properly with a new release and you stay with the release before it, you are stuck with an older version of Firefox. Sure, you can get the new version from Ubuntuzilla but if the release is still supported wh...

Re: Mint Christian edition

In Mint parlayance, "CE" means "Community Edition". As in, a sanctioned Mint variant with non-official COMMUNITY support. Like, for example, XFCE or Fluxbox, or how KDE started. I don't recall if KDE is still called "Mint KDE CE" anymore, but thats the old name for it. [edit]Just checked, yup its st...

Re: Mint & Ubuntu - Your likes and dislikes

In the past I used Windows and Kde distros, I am used to one taskbar on the bottom of my screen. I like the menu in MINT rather than having several drop down menus as in Ubuntu. You can have a single bottom taskbar in Windows, KDE, Gnome, whatever you want. Personally, I prefer a TOP taskbar. Thats...

Re: Netflix

Ironically, Netflix does work on Linux. Just not the desktop linux you're using.

Those Netflix boxes that some people hook up to stream movies? Yeah, those run linux.

Re: Netflix

Ever considered using IE6 in Wine to connect to Netflix? That might work. Or you might run Virtualbox, run XP in Virtualbox, run a web browser in IE, and see if that works.

Netflix does not support linux. You could try writing a nicely formatted email to Netflix.

Re: Internet dropping whilst still connected to network

You say you're connected but you can't ping out. If this is literally true, then the problem is upstream of the laptop: router, cable/dsl modem, etc. But maybe you don't have any reliable way to KNOW that you're connected. You're just trusting nm-applet's little changable icon on your panel bar. If ...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

Last night I decided, for some unknown reason, that I need to upgrade the Mint box that my kids use from Gloria to Helena. So I install ran the mint update tool to upgrade to Mint 8. It got partway through the update, and then started giving me errors. Repeatedly. Darn it all! What a moron I am to t...

Re: NBR?

I appreciate this how-to, but as a user of both Mint 8 and Ubuntu Karmic UNR, I have this observation to make: It is MUCH easier to "Mint up" the Karmic UNR than it is to "UNR" an install of Mint 8. Used to be that the biggie that Mint brought to the Ubuntu dinner table was a distro that includes, b...

...and, if it helps (probably not...), I also scored a 1540 on the SAT and aced the ASVAB boards in 10th grade, so I'm not used to seeing 2-digit test scores. The current SAT is scored very different than the old SATs. They re-jiggered the curve when they applied a different statistical mode...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

But once Karmic/Helena is installed, people with this particular wifi error can no longer connect, Be smart about it. The Mint or Ubuntu installer isn't going to THINK for you. Be forewarned, plug in an ethernet cable, and update the installer so the kernel module installs properly. The problem is ...

Re: Pretty Angry Right Now.

I was using Ubuntu 9.04 (gnome) and it was OK sound-wise, but had Intel Graphics issues. Ubuntu 9.04 had Intel graphics issues. Nothing more can or needs to be said. These "issues" were well known, well documented, and there were several different very solid fixes out in the wild for Jaunty. I'm fr...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

@MrMint: Glad that worked for you. I've been pointing people w/ Broadcom issues at that solution ever since Karmic came out. Turns out there is a bug in the Broadcom INSTALLER. The driver works just fine, but the installer has a bug. Unfortunately, that bug wound up in the version of the installer t...

Karmic wireless problems = Helena wireless problems. Same Ubuntu base, same problems, same solutions. I too installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on a Dell mini 9. Re: LXDE Distro?

Most LXDE distro remixes try to go pretty purist with their LXDE implementation. Fedora's use of GMixer indicates that their LXDE mix is not purist at all, and that they're not afraid to bloat your system with a full suite of gnome libs. This, unfortunately, is the reason that most XFCE mixes aren't...
