Re: Kubuntu--Fat Boy...

richyrich's graph is of a machine with 2gb ram. Likely: 32bit Kubuntu.
XidCat's report is of a machine with 4gb ram. Likely: 64bit Kubuntu.

That makes a huge difference right there.

Never heard of it. Google doesn't have much information about it. Any reason why you didn't buy a Linksys?

Re: Change the release schedule of Mint

2. Only make one major release a year. How about Mint 2010 is released in the summer, months after the April release of Ubuntu, taking plenty of time to make improvements I'd be in favor of this. I know it flies against Ubuntu's release schedule and more closely resembles some other distro, like Ma...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

But blaming significant problems on manufacturers It doesn't matter if you like it or not, or if you agree with it or not: it is still the truth. or on users who don't have CS degrees is just pointless. Distro developers need feedback, and users want stuff that just works. Maybe some day they'll ma...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

@AK Dave: I see what you are saying about this not being linux's "fault," but the average user (who is afraid of trying something new and complicated) doesn't give a crap about who's fault it is. "but they're ignorant so we should coddle them" doesn't hold much water with me. Seriously, have you ev...

Re: Internet "hangs" with onboard Atheros wireless card

Cards that use the ath9k kernel module have a common ACPI error with powersave functions. This typically manifests as a failure to reconnect to the network after a suspend/resume. Looks like you're seeing a small variant on the theme. Its a powersave bug, and I believe it to be a hardware problem. T...

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

One of the top reported "problems" with any linux distro is, and has been for a long time, some variation on the theme of "wireless doesn't work". Always this is a showstopper problem for the person experiencing it. Occasionally this is also a genuine problem. The majority of all problems are solved...

All my important data is saved to a DVD-RW for safe keeping. :) I'll see your DVD-RW backup storage, and raise you one! Re: Download link for b43-fwcutter (for Mint 8)?

Easiest solution for this is to get thee to a wired network connection. Just plug the Inspiron in the old-fashioned way. Then you need either the b43-fwcutter or bcmwl-kernel-source. You'd want to do something like this: $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source [e...

Re: Kubuntu Netbook Remix Prevue

I like KNR, but its not ready for prime time. Lets be honest about it. I really like KNR, but even the devs for this admit that what they're doing with KNR isn't going to work right until KDE 4.4 is rolled into main. It looks good now, but isn't quite solid. The interface is built on plasma and will...

Re: mounting a network drive

No problem! I think you've already solved your issue and don't understand that you've done so. The enclosure went bad; the drive is still good. You can plug in the drive as a USB and your Mint virtual guest can mount it. Did I get all of that right? Perfect! Plug in ANOTHER drive as USB, copy the fi...

Re: Is it a bad sign that Mint ran a "drive check" when booting?

I consider this a "problem", but for reasons very different than those who say this is not a problem.

Yes, this is a routine design feature of the file system to self-check and repair.

The PROBLEM is that if you're seeing this, it means you're routinely rebooting. :D

Re: 32-bit vs. 64-bit

Should I use Linux MInt 32-bit or 64-bit? I saw on the download section that it says 64-bit is less stable than 32-bit. But it says that 32-bit supports 64-bit processors. I suspect that you misunderstand the contextual use of the word "stable". I suspect that you mis-apply "stable" as meaning that...

Does this mean I need to create an empty folder called "OMGAUDIO"? If so where do I put it? This means you SHOULD create an empty folder named OMGAUDIO at the root level of the player's directory tree. The root level is the top level. When you mount the media player and bring it up in Nautilus, you...
