Re: moonOS

Why use a spare hard drive or partition for playing with something like Moon? Just throw it into Virtualbox!

Re: really old dell inspiron

Well, just because it is "junk" to me doesn't mean I can't put a distro on it and give it away for free to someone who might make better use of than I do. Thats what the LUG is for.

Re: really old dell inspiron

I have several computers at home. Only one is currently not functioning, and that is because I need to scrounge a couple extra parts to make it a functional desktop. But toss a pile of junk hardware at me, and I'll want to make a functioning system out of it. Which means I always have a computer, so...

Re: really old dell inspiron

Here's what we do at our LUG with old machines that we want to install something relatively new on, like Debian or Ubuntu: Temporarily drop in some extra ram. Works like magic. Seriously. Just scavenge some ram from somewhere else, do the install, and then put the computer's designated 256mb back in...

Re: How do i upgrade from thunderbird 2 to 3?

Its a beta. Therefore it is not in the repos. You need to add the ppa to your sources and install from there. deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fta/ubuntu jaunty main Break down the above sources line and you see that there is a Launchpad.net ppa archive for this, under the author (fta), with binaries fo...

Re: Ok, I'm moving on...

Good advice from GrayWizardLinux.

MintUpdate's "level" system works pretty well for helping folks avoid trouble. If you stick with it, it does work, and saves a lot of headache.

... LinuxMint, The GUI is greatly simular to windows. Wow! You're right! Microsoft must have copied the X-windowing system that was around long before MS Windows. Linux's windowing interfaces and MS Windows are similar in function and appearance, as well as having a similar name, because both evolv...

Re: linuxmint suggestion?

If the computer is so old that the ram is indeed 248mb, then we're talking about some seriously ancient tech here. Some museum piece from the latter half of the 20th Century.

I agree with DrHu: DSL or Puppy, maybe Knoppix, not Mint.

Re: dual boot xp not working after mint installed

Your data has been at least partially overwritten. You'll need some extensive forensics to get it back, if any, even partially. I am not familiar with a reputable how-to dualboot guide that would have advised you to do precisely what you did. Unfortunately, this looks like a case where Linux gave yo...

Re: People that think Windoze is better than Linux..

Yeah, its an old rant from 2005. Not relevant to Linux in 2009, but still relevant to Windows. Windows hasn't changed much, but Linux has. Here is why Windows is better than Linux. (1) Installing programs is easy with windows because there is a standard. Try installing VLC and you'll see what I mean...

The 18 game keys on my keyboard shall work not only in games but overall, i had macros for programs when i was using windows. You'll have to redo the macros in Linux. The macros you made for Windows do not apply to Linux. The macros were not saved in some flash memory in the keyboard itself; rather...

Re: Identify computer model number

Usually there is a sticker on the case, sometimes on the side and sometimes on the back by the power supply, that has stuff like the computer's S/N.

But the only useful downloads you'll get from HP will be if you have a critical need for a BIOS update.
