Very good points. I have switched from using gnome 3.4 although I really liked it. I think I am using standard gnome. I just bought a 8gb usb flash drive, since i can not boot to cd. What cd/dvd iso would be best as a recovery usb? That way in case anything happens, i can use an usb key to fix/repai...

Lol i am afraid to reboot in case this problem re-occurs.

So, what kind of precautions can i take to prevent problems or to make sure i have really good backups?

Actually it's winxp, not sure why it says win7 loader. But yes i can still boot to winxp just fine. Can i download and install any recovery software, while booted via usb? Because of my hard drive layout, i am unable to boot to cd or dvd. Would it help if i showed a screenshot instead? I can do that...

grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot (is /dev mounted?). Installation finished. No error reported. That is the error message I get. I rebooted, and still can't boot into linux. I found out that my linux mint partition is /dev/sdb3, and when i booted to usb, it had it mounted already with a long string of alphanumeric characters. My first hard drive is my winxp partition, which is the boot partition. i have 3 partitions on my main hd, which is 1.5 tb, and my 2nd one is 500 ...

I really prefer that those stay up there. Even though I am really new to linux, I really like the cinnamon desktop, allows me to have a custoizable taskbar, that looks somewhat like windows, so creating an experience that isn't too unfamiliar.
