Re: Windows failed, Linux prevailed

(Also: No, setting up WLAN and Webcam hardware is mostly easier on Windows.) While I don't know about how easy Webcams are to set up, but I would definitely argue your other point. I haven't haven't have any trouble getting my network functioning in Linux using Samba - in fact, all I have to do is ...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Even you do great work on Cinnamon I am strong fan of MATE and intend to use in a future as my main (and most probably only) desktop environment for both my personal and work computers. I feel the exact same - Cinnamon is nice, but MATE is where plan to stay for long time to come (probably as my on...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

One of the appeals for me is that Mint with Gnome 3, (which is dispised by so many I see now), is NOT a Windows wannabe; where it seems like both MATE and cinnamon are trying to go back to Gnome 2, or become Windows clones. When I first tried Linux a decade ago, I used KDE, but I prefer the new Gno...

[Solved]Game Crashes:Oolite and STK on a Dell Dimension 4600

I have a Dell Dimension 4600i onto which I recently installed Mint 12, using a Micron LCD monitor (which isn't recognized by Mint). Most everything works excellently :D , but there are at least two somewhat graphics-heavy games that keep crashing :( (Oolite 1.76 and the latest STK from the repositor...

Re: Default Desktop for Ubiquity

I wish I could find the article that mentioned abadoning MATE, I looked without success. This is good news for anyone that has an older machine. It looks like I need to do some more research into the next edition, and I hope that the MATE version will install using the MATE desktop. Incidentally, af...

Re: Default Desktop for Ubiquity

No need to worry. With Linux Mint 13 both MATE and Cinnamon are getting their own dedicated editions. See the "News and summary" section in this blog post: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2000 Thanks for the reply! That's some good news there. I was a little concerned when I had read that MATE was goi...

Default Desktop for Ubiquity

As I am not completely sure if MATE is going to make it to the next release, nor the future of Gnome "Classic" I would just like to suggest that whatever the default desktop is for "vanilla" Mint 13 Ubiquity install, it should be light-weight. I had real problems with Gnome 3 not completely loading ...

Re: [SOLVED] Managing root's trash

I'm not sure I think this was solved - yet. Fortunately, Mint has the wonderful option of immediately deleting files in the context menu (Delete). Anything you move to trash while using gksudo nautilus will go to the root's trash. The lesson - use the Delete option for files that you want to permana...

Re: disable hot corner cinnamon

Robert, the original post you replied to was from back in January - with the current version of Cinnamon, 1.4, you can control the hot corner (including turning it off, or moving it to any corner of the screen) from Cinnamon settings. Boy, I feel stupid - I somehow completely overlooked that. I gue...

Re: disable hot corner cinnamon

Make sure you are at the latest version of Cinnamon. Make sure dconf-tools is installed and then launch dconf-editor and navigate to org -> cinnamon. You should see entries there to disable it. I wouldn't be surprised if Clem eventually has a better GUI tool for these tweaks, but he is probably con...

Perhaps a bit of a loaded question =D. I'm going to give it a shot, but of course backup before trying. Thanks for the post!

Problems with Sandy Bridge architecture and Kernel 3.0.0

I'm running Mint 12 64-bit, with the following: OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Desktop Linux **Me***-DX4860 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 20:45:39 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ---------------- *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: 2nd...

Re: shortkeys

I'm a little curious if this is truly resolved. I just install Mint 12 Main, and I'm not getting the shortcuts to work in Mate either, however they work find in Gnome.
