Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....

<SNIP> I went to my community college to register on the computers. I logged in and found two programs I might use while going to school. Not sure though. Mathematica and Matlab. I think when I need to I can just go to school and run these programs there. I'm running Matlab R2012a on all three of m...

Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....

i am not saying that is not working, i am saying that the performance is way behind the proprietary driver in windows. let's face the fact. i have an ati x1270 on my laptop and the sVideo output doesnt work anymore in linux, 2 or 3 weeks ago it worked.....but not always. in w7, due to the proprieta...

Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....

I really want to switch to Linux MInt but I have some hesitations. No need to hesitate - you may regret doing so later  1. Will I get better performance running LInux Mint KDE than Windows 7 and also less memory to run it? It has to be KDE for my wife who is used to the Windows look. I sho...

Fortune Cookies

I actually started a thread on Fortune Cookies on the Oolite BB , but this one came up today and I thought it much more poignant here. I unfortunately only started using Mint in April (unfortunate because I didn't switch sooner :D), however the more quotes I read of Husse's, the more I realize what ...

In my experience the need for the virtual console seems to come up when the GUI is acting up or freezing ;)

Awesome! Thank you Vincent, you've given me some food for thought, and now I know why there wasn't a .bashrc file as well :D. Looks like I have some reading to do, thanks for the link, too  !

Re: Can Not Return to Desktop from Virtual Terminal- Maya

Hello, motsteve. Hm. Personally, the situation is quite normal on my machines: <ctrl><alt><f1> to <ctrl><alt><f6> will take me from the graphical desktop to my 6 text ttys (tty1 to tty6). Pressing <alt><f8> will take me back to the graphical desktop. This is true on Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon and xfce ...

[Solved] Missing .bashrc file from /etc/skel/

I'm still a complete noob when it comes to bash   . Anyway, I'm trying to establish some aliases for use in the terminal, and created a .bash_aliases file in my home folder, but I think that the aliases aren't working since the .bashrc is non-existant in the /etc/skel/ folder. Is this a...

Re: [Semi-Solved] Cannot Enable Mint 13 Startup Splash

Using startup manager and checkmarking splash screen. Then imputing the command in terminal worked for me also to get the splash screen. The splash screen only displays for 1 or 2 seconds though. Did you change the resolution or color depth? By default mine is set to 640x480 and 8 bit. My laptops r...

Re: No Internet in Virtual Box

Found a Simple Solution to the Connectivity Problem in Virtualbox: 1. Set the Network setting to NAT in Virtualbox settings for WinXP. 2. After booting into the virtual XP machine, go to Properties of the Network Adapter (right click on My Network Places, Properties, right click on Local Area Conne...

Re: Login screen with face selector

I just figured out how to do this today, with Mint Pro MDM theme . Download that, install it by dragging the tarball into the list found in Login Window (under Administration in the menu) on the 'Local' tab *see picture below. You'll have to use Mozo (aka Main Menu, formerly alacarte) to enable the ...

How to: get yourself classic Gnome Menus in MATE

I nearly posted this as a question because searching the web did not return any results on just exactly how one goes about doing this, just a bunch of teasing pictures with absolutely no instructional content. It is quite simple in the end, but it is not completely obvious, at least not to myself, w...

Re: apt-get upgrade broke my Mint?

Sorry, robert, I didn't mean to intrude on your advice, which was of course absolutely correct and comprehensive! I just kind of had the notion that perhaps trachys could use his GUI-based file manager to get sudo access rather than to use terminal. Plus, I think sometimes you need gksudo to open G...

Re: apt-get upgrade broke my Mint?

Hi caerolle, Thank you for helping me with this. I'm still on the live session (Gnome, right). Some files in home/ on the hard drive I'm being allowed to 'handle,' most I cannot. I'm not being offered the chance to open folders as administrator. Not sure what's going on here, but I'm trying not to ...

Re: apt-get upgrade broke my Mint?

You should (theoretically) be able to access the other folders from the partition in a live session, (as long as it is mounted, which you can do through the file browser). Any media you use to store the information will mount as soon as it is connected. You shouldn't need to use the terminal at all,...

Re: apt-get upgrade broke my Mint?

Connecting the hard drive to another machine (as a secondary hard drive ;) ), saving your personal data to another device, and re-installing mint might just be your best bet, better than trying to fix a bonkered system.

Re: Cannot Enable Share of a NTFS partition folder

Bravo Altair!! Jolly good, man. I'm not sure honestly how the partition is mounted other than I don't have it done automatically on boot, and I mount it manually when I start a desktop session. fstab file was fairly simple, and did not include the partition, anyway. I did two things. A parent folder...

Re: No Internet in Virtual Box

For what it's worth, I'm having the same difficulty. Only started popping up with Maya. Lisa VM's let me connect no problem. The whole situation is really disappointing in the end, because I haven't been able to play around with different distros like I was able to do just a few months ago. :(
