Re: What is the best Linux Mint option for me?

Hello Wayne, Thanks for the help. I will look into smxi/sgfxi to see what it can do. I did follow the instructions in the link you posted on how to install LMDE on LVM (with or without encryption), but got stuck at changing the config file under gmd3, which wasn't present in my installation (Mate / ...

Re: LVM install option

Hello Zikco: Thanks for the help. Yes, I thought along the same line, using cp -r ... to copy the partitions. However, I plan to use the live USB to do that, in order not to copy a running file system. Next step is chroot, edit the fstab and grub files to point to the new locations, and update-grup ...

Re: What is the best Linux Mint option for me?

@wayne: Thanks for the advice re Debian SID. I actually never tried plain Debian. Could be a good option, since I know form others that they have succeeded to get Xen and VGA passthrough working. The reason I'm trying to make it work with Linux Mint is that I simply love it. It looks great, it works...

Re: What is the best Linux Mint option for me?

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Vincent! I usually do not take the latest or experimental stuff, or only in exceptional cases. About LMDE, is there a way to choose packages from "non-experimental" repositories? I like the idea of a rolling distribution that doesn't need a reinstall / upgrade ev...

Re: What is the best Linux Mint option for me?

Thanks Vincent!

I'm currently running an LTS release on my old PC. The thing is that I want to install some very new applications such as the latest Gimp. I was hoping that LMDE 201204 would give me both stability and continuous updates and upgrades (of stable software releases). Am I wrong?

Re: LVM install option

cc: If I follow your advice, it means I need to completely reinstall the system (phew, once more). Isn't there an easier way to just copy my installed / and /home to the LVs I've prepared? Or take a snapshot (can that be done with regular ext4 partitions) and adjust/update grub2?

Re: LVM install option

Thanks zz. I followed your link and gather that this is what I need to do (I shamelessly copy from another post): "edit (as root) /etc/mdm/mdm.conf and underneath [daemon] Add the next lines: AutomaticLoginEnable=true AutomaticLogin=username where username is your name To stop auto login just change...

Re: LVM install option

I tried that already, but my result was a somewhat broken system. It would boot alright into the desktop, but then things didn't work as expected. The particular issue was with Mate (I think LMDE 12 Cinnamon/Mate installs with Mate as default?). Anyway, when the How-To got to this: "Because the mint...

Re: Gaming on Linux mint

Is there a Linix Mint (LMDE) tutorial for installing Xen with VGA passthrough, like the one shown in the link?

[SOLVED] What is the best Linux Mint option for me?

I use Linux Mint for years now. Recently LMDE 12 was released and I liked the idea of a rolling distribution - no upgrades anymore! BUT, is that really the best way to go? I want a stable system with minimum maintenance - no playing around trying new desktops and stuff. Just something that works and...

Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

My ultimate goal is get a Xen hypervisor installation running LMDE 12 as dom0, and Windows 7 as domU with VGA passthrough. I have a PNY Quadro 600 graphics card and like to get the Nvidia proprietary driver to run on the Xen kernel, so I can have full graphics support under the dom0 LMDE kernel. Can...

LVM install option

LMDE 12 doesn't have an LVM option for partitioning. I tried Fedora 16 and 17 which both have LVM as an option, but Fedora is terrible and, that is my opinion, just for geeks - nothing worked "out of the box". It would be great to add LVM as an option to the installer. I installed it now on regular ...

That approach should work. You will need to chroot in to properly setup grub.
Thanks Pepas. I hope to make it work sometime during the weekend. First I need to solve some Xen-related issues.

Re: Howto install LMDE with LVM (with or without encryption)

Some remarks to my previous post: While the system booted Ok, I had some minor problems later on, for example synaptic would only start via terminal and sudo -i or -s. Could have been a sudoers issue with permissions. I installed some other stuff (Xen and Nvidia proprietary driver) and got some comp...

Re: Add Option of Full Disk Encryption to all future Linux M

+1

I don't really care for encryption, but LVM is a must! I use LVM on my disks and this requires installer support. It's a real pain to install LMDE 12 on LVs, and any way I chose created problems in the end.

I voted for it in the "idea" forum.

Re: Howto install LMDE with LVM (with or without encryption)

Thanks for providing this tutorial. It eventually worked for me, with some minor alterations: 1. Downloaded LMDE 12 Mate/Cinnamon 201204 64 bit release 2. Created live USB stick (on my old Linux machine) 3. Instead of installing directly onto disk, I installed the LMDE as a VM in Virtualbox - see th...
