Re: Privacy; should you even bother?

I agree with RIH , you should do what you can, no system is 100% secure, but most crackers are just looking for an easy win, make it tricky, some will persevere, but most will move on.

Prodigal SOn

After distro hopping and deciding to settle on Mint (several times) I've finally given up with Arch (stuff breaks, last one was to reset all permissions to RO....on MY files and folders) Ubuntu is good, as are the spin offs (yep tried most of them) but recently some packages have been removed from t...

Re: Some "easy" questions

Sounds like on installation the USB drive was connected and GRUB installed to that. Not sure if you can get round that (anyone?) other than start again......without the USB drive connected, happy to be wrong on this

FWIW, I did finally find a solution, go into the microphone settings and disable one of the two channels showing...sorry it's taken so long to come back on this, but have been distro hopping trying to find something that worked 'out of the box'

Can you enable it via pavucontrol? From memory it's in the last tab (config) you should be able to select hdmi via the dropdown.

Re: Ideapad 310 keeps dropping wifi

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately it didn't work. Looks like Linux has issues with Realtek cards, guess I'll stick with Win10 on the laptop for now :?

[SOLVED] Lenovo Ideapad 310

Hi all Has anyone successfully installed Mint (or any distro of Linux) on a Lenovo Ideapad 310? I can install, and just about everything works out of the box, but....the internal microphone doesn't. It shows in the sound settings as being there and enabled, but doesn't respond. Googeling does give a...

Hi slc

Have you tried vlc?
I find that smplayer can be a bit frustrating with many formats of dvd/cd, whereas vlc 'just works'

Prodigal Returns

Well, after nearly three years I've returned I had been running Xubuntu on a media store PC, and main PC......but after having the network connection keep dropping on the media one for no apparent reason, decided it was time to try something else, so tried Mint again. Wow, very pleasantly surprised....

Future of Mint

Hi all I'm currently using Xubuntu as my main distro, but am more and more unhappy about the way the company is going. I tried Mint a while back and was impressed and am looking now at switching away from buntu completely. My concern is that as Mint is based on Ubuntu, and having read a couple of ar...

Hi phill1978
I also prefer XFCE, but don't use the default option for a second panel.

I've found Cairo-Dock is way better, far more configuration options, plus it seems to do what you're after :D

thanks for all the responses and apologies for taking soooo long to get back on this, I'd just about given up the will to live

Some interesting comments have come from the question so I'll try to look into some of them, if not then I may just buy a new router (without readyshare)
