Re: Effect of deleting old snapshots in Timeshift?

Basically the work is being done by the EXT4 filesystem using rsync and hardlinks... Timeshift is just a frontend for the process. This is basically what Timeshift does - the hard link diagram may help you understand what's happening in the background

Re: Strange issue.

Not sure what DE you're using, but should be similar anyway... right click on the Panel -> Properties (or Settings) make sure the Automatically increase length checkbox is checked.

Re: a LIKE button for posts on this forum

I can't see any use for a Like button here, but a "Solved by"with a summary and a link to the post that solved it might help if appended to the first post. Certain forums do this already, and it means it takes just one click to get the solution, rather than scrolling through pages of sometimes usele...

Re: Screen blank after sleep

I have a similar problem with XFCE on Debian Stretch, but only with pre 4.10 Kernels. I just switch to TTY1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) and then TTY7 (CTRL-ALT-F7) gets the Desktop back without any need for killing any processes. I don't need the newer Kernels, and they use more RAM on my hardware, so I put up wi...

Re: Best (firefox) youtube video downloader?

I'm a bit different (odd?)... I prefer to use SMTube to browse and play youtube a/v (I try not to run sites in Firefox that need scripts to function, especially ones that use Flash... unless I've no other choice... SMTube gives me another choice and doesn't need Flash), and if I want to download, th...

If it helps, @Fred, I've been using Firefox 60 with firejail 0.9.50 without any problems since Wednesday... Debian Stretch based distro though... not tested on Mint or Ubuntu.

Re: Manjaro overtakes Mint in Distrowatch page-hit rankings

Do YOU think it means anything? If so, what? I'm asking because I honestly don't know. Of course it means something , but it doesn't mean Manjaro is better than Mint... or that Mint is better than Manjaro... competition is good - encourages all to keep on top of their game... discourages complacenc...

Re: Using the Terminal to Backup Home Dir.

More than what you asked for, but: Here's a couple of pages worth reading... both are the same, but one has a few more details about hard links. It's basically what Timeshift does, but you'll maybe learn something useful in the process ;) Rsync Date Stamped, Snapshot Style, Incremental Backups Time ...

I almost understood a line of code written in Perl once... but I might have just dreamt it ;)

Have a look here... there's a single line quine in perl, and an explanation of the code

Damn ;)

Actually, I'm sure you'll get at least one one-liner posted if you wait a bit (there's one in Python, probably other languages too)

Re: Linux Mint as a replacement for a C64

The games on the Commodore 64 were a bit basic, but quite addictive. I coded a few myself using 6502 Machine Language (a bit different to most programming languages used today ;) ). Kikstart 2 was quite an addictive game at the time (1980 something) - it was basically a matchstick man on a motorbike...

As for editing system configuration files: aside from pkexec, gvfs now has builtin support for admin:// paths that automatically invoke PolKit as needed. None of the stuff you listed works for me (Xfce Mint18.3). Is it supposed to work now or not? $ gparted-pkexec ... Password: polkit-agent-helper-...

I've used neither, but have you tried Darktable or Lightzone ? Both are supposed to be good alternatives to Lightroom, but I shoot jpeg and use Photoshop through Wine in Linux, so have no need for RAW processors. If you're lucky, one of the above will suit your purpose, if not, you'll probably end u...

What's 'syfi'? Is that a variant of 'sci-fi' or science fiction?
I think Chris is incorporating part of the title of a TV channel that's available here in the U.S. called 'SyFy'.
I've a long list of things that I do each day without good reason, Jerry, this was one of them ;)
