No messages in /var/mail/ in Mint 13

I've realized that, unlike Ubuntu to which I'm used,in Mint 13 I have no mail at all in /var/mail/,the directory is actually empty.
Is this by default,or have I inadvertently stopped some service and/or removed some package?

Re: MintUpdate behavior (security updates)

I've had a look at the pdf manual,it explains how the update manager works from a user's point of view, but obviously doesn't say anything about what's "under the hood",so to speak:I was trying to understand what is the logic according to which packages are tagged and where are the configuration file...

Re: MintUpdate behavior (security updates)

Can you post a link to the documentation you are talking about?
Good point about Firefox updates and stability patches-although in the latter case,I've found that if you have an ATI video card and proprietary driver already installed, some of them may break things rather than improve.

MintUpdate behavior (security updates)

I'd like to understand something more about the inner logic of mintUpdate:how does it mark the available updates as safe/unsafe/dangerous? In other words, which are the criteria according to which a package is believed to be safe,or unsafe,or downright dangerous for system stability? Assuming I'd lik...

Re: Debug messagges in syslog

Solved:I did inadvertently check something in the MDM greeter settings that sent mdm debug messages to syslog.

Debug messagges in syslog

I'm seeing lines like these in my logs: mdm[1847]DEBUG: mdm_auth_user_add: Adding cookie for 1000 mdm[1847] DEBUG: Attempting to parse key string: daemon/UserAuthDir= mdm[1847] DEBUG: Attempting to parse key string: daemon/UserAuthFile=.Xauthority mdm[1847]DEBUG: Attempting to parse key string: secu...

Thanks cmost. :) I started to do this, but it seems to me that deb http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20130815T034749Z/ sid main does not exist any more...and that was the place to find the compiz-files. :( Has Compiz disappeared entirely from Debian repos? I too was just going to try this v...

Exactly, that's really annoying-and,having also tried Debian stable with Mate,I can see that the exact same bug is still there.

Re: Caja plugins in Mate 1.6 ?

Search on "caja" in Synaptics or a similar tool and you should find the available plugins. Alright,I was wrong:in Mint 15 with Mate 1.6 the open in terminal caja plugin does exist,I was trying some live CDs and got confused-anyhow,if need eventually arises to install such plugin/extensions from git...

Caja plugins in Mate 1.6 ?

In Mate 1.2 there were some plugins for Caja,at least there was open in terminal, whereas in Mate 1.6 I can't find any:I've had a look here https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-fi ... n-terminal and apparently it can be added-but how can I do this?

Re: Forks: Compiz-MATE 0.8.8, mate-globalmenu 0.7.10 (LMDE)

I reckon that if this Compiz works in Mint Debian,it should eventually work in Debian straight as well? I read here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=217&t=114613#p641378 that this fork was actually compiled on Debian Wheezy when it was in its testing stage, now that Wheezy is current stabl...

Re: Hot swap (SATA disks) in Mint 13 ?

Thanks for your reply,it is indeed true that with all the messages scattered around the subforums finding something is kinda tricky,or at least very time-consuming... now back to our SATA hot-swap topic:I see that for removing the drive you are using two more commands: hdparm -y /dev/sda echo offlin...

Re: Hot swap (SATA disks) in Mint 13 ?

Well I did some research and didn't find much:apparently folks who routinely hot-swap SATA disks just enable that option in the motherboard BIOS and plug the drive in,then to remove it,they first unmount the partitions, then flush the cache and stop the drive with the command I've posted echo 1 > /sy...

Re: Hot swap (SATA disks) in Mint 13 ?

Just a quick reply to confirm that hot swap works indeed in Mint 13:the SATA drive is detected (but not auto-mounted) right after is attached, and to remove it I first unmount it from the disk utility GUI and then stop it using this command in a terminal echo 1 > /sys/block/sd$/device/delete which as...

Reinstalling Grub from a running system?

I've just rsynced my actual Mint13 install on another drive for some tests and managed to boot it using Super Grub2 Disk http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/ ,my question now is : can I really install grub to the MBR of this drive with just this single command sudo grub-install /dev/sd[dev...

Re: ls -l date format ?

Yes,as you pointed out the ls version included in Ubuntu 10.04 is way older than the one in Mint 13 (kinda unsurprisingly, given that this is based on Ubuntu 12.04)-and also,as you suggested, the LANGUAGE=en_US:en variable doesn't do any difference, either when using export and then doing ls -l or usin...

Re: ls -l date format ?

Thank you very much,it could actually be a matter of different locale:I've now checked on Ubuntu 10.04,and there is this difference ubuntu mint LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en_US:en LANGUAGE= maybe this is the reason why ls-l has a different time format ? As for the aliases,I haven't a...

ls -l date format ?

I've seen that by default ls -l in Mint 13 lists the date field in this format Jul 16 18:20 which I find very convenient when using sort, therefore I'd like to replicate this setting in some other distros that I also use, only I haven't managed to understand where to look:in /etc/bash.bashrc I can't s...
